Sonic Team is amazing. I've never seen a studio fail to make a good game for as long as they have and SOMEHOW still be told to make more.
The only good Sonic game in recent memory was a game that wasn't even made by Sonic Team: Sonic Mania.
Apparently the devs of Sonic Mania are making a new game called Rollin' Rascal. It's pretty much off-brand Sonic, but there's a demo available for the game and it's actually really fun.
Some of them also worked on the recent release Penny's Big Breakaway. More platforming, but not with quite the emphasis on speed.
I'm surprised Sonic is still around. I haven't played a good Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 2 (except Mania). Wasn't a fan of Shadow the Hedgehog, and never played some others I've heard were good like Herpes and Unleashed. Generations was alright.
Everyone always forgets about Sonic: Herpes
There have been some generally well-received games since Adventure 2, like Generations, which you mentioned, along with Colors, Mania, and Frontiers seems to be generally liked enough.
Oops, forgot to mention Mania because it was in the parent comment. That was the Sonic game I was waiting decades for!
I forgot that I'd heard good things about Colors, too, but I have no idea what Frontiers is all about. I'll have to look into that one.
