I think vegans are crazy if they care about the 99.9% to 100% animal product free part more than about the, say, 50% to 99.9% part. The rest of them aren't.

Agree on that. I think the biggest issue is that the most extreme (caring about the 0,01%) tend to be the most vocal and agressive while they are the absolute minority of the group. All the vegans i know irl will not talk about veganism until asked about something (myself included).
