I had kind of forgotten how bleak Rietz's situation was in the beginning of this series and how harshly he was treated. I think that Ars does bring his modern world sensibilities to his style of leadership (wanting to make the world a better place), but he is also very practical in that he recognizes he is just the son of a small-time lord, standing at the precipice of war (raising a couple of talented people out of poverty). I am looking forward to seeing more of Ars's retinue enter the show, as the characters in the group are a lot of fun.
Having that kind of constraint can be a pro or a con, depending on the writer. It can either give the protagonist some tough problems to solve and make them fight for every little scrap of quality of life they bring to their people, or it can make a nice excuse for the protagonist to set aside lofty goals of equal rights because there are bigger problems.
I just worry a bit that this is the kind of story that considers Rietz's problems solved because he caught Ars's eye, when there are still people just like him starving in the streets and Rietz would still be among them if Ars hadn't happened across him. Plenty of political anime bring up systemic problems and then call them solved when the protagonist handpicks some individuals to live the good life, so I'm always wary.
