It's a quick Google search for an alternative software that is pretty user-friendly and independent of Apple.

Also I suggest replacing the Hard drive with a card that lets you put in SD cards.

Back in the day, I used to rock iPod Linux. Looks like it's still about http://www.ipodlinux.org/

There was also rockbox that let you play flac on iPod. https://www.rockbox.org/

Or less exteme, I'm sure that foobar2000 had plugins for managing your iPod.

I ‘member putting a movie on a tiny little Nano. And Doom. ~~Girls~~ nerds loved it. Simpler times.

Both made possible by Linux IIRC!

I got my 2 Gen Nano in 2008 and ditched iTunes after day one, EphPod worked just fine.

If you like this aesthetic, perhaps check out the Tangara on Crowd Supply. https://www.crowdsupply.com/cool-tech-zone/tangara

It's fully open-source, too, so anyone can contribute to making improvements and a company can never discontinue it.
