You Should Know

A lot of social media sites will try to get you to sign up to save/bookmark posts on-site or in-app (even Lemmy!), but if you're viewing them via browser you can just save a bookmark to your browser.

The perks to this are: you don't necessarily need to make more accounts, your browser bookmarks can be renamed & tagged & organized into different folders, and you can search your bookmarks!

A lot of on-site/in-app bookmarking doesn't provide those benefits, at least not without trying to make you pay up.

No matter what sort of work you do, at some point you end up needing a sharp edge. I usually have a small folding knife with me for just such occasions. Sometimes, other people need the sharp edge so I lend them my knife. Now, they can open it fore sure, but almost everyone is confused on how to close the knife.

I even had one co-worker who ended up disassembling my knife trying to figure out how to close the darn thing!

It's just a skill people seem to not have and they should as it's a very popular design.

I read his name in "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72," but I never really understood who he was. I used it for 3 years during my bachelor for many different courses, and I was very satisfied from the variety of choices and outcomes.

I've been fostering a family member for a month or so, and it all came to a head today. My wife and I tried, but the behavior was just too much for us to feel safe with our existing children. I hate that we're giving up and I hate the circumstances that caused this, but it is what it is. If you're in the same place please don't beat yourself up; sometimes you can want something really bad and it still not be right for you.

Budgeting is a very crucial part of your finances that will either break you or make you survive into another month. I have a very unpopular belief that says, if we take away the inflation issue, take away the wage issue and wage theft problem in America. I do believe that a lot of people are just simply bad with money.

And I'm no bank-level financial advisor or anything. I've been able to sustain all of my expenses without a hitch. I've paid my monthly loans on time, actually, pretty well in advance we'll say because as soon as I see bills come up infront of me, I want them out of my face as soon as possible.

I always advise people when they're out on their own and that's to watch their numbers. Always total the amount you'll be paid by the month, if it's fixed income. Then, take all of the expenses you're paying for by the month and total them up. Then, subtract the amount of your expenses from the total earning and you'll figure how much you've got left to work with and how you'll spend it if you want to. Saving is also key.

I'm not here to tell you what to do with your money. People get vehemently defensive when you point out the flaws of their spending habits, always treating it as a control issue when you're just simply finding what's wrong with it as they complain all of the time as to why they're broke.

But all I will say in regards to that, is that, you really need to weigh your needs from your wants. Impulsivity is a bad driver in how it ruins our finances. I've done things where I'd be in a store and I'd take something I thought I'd really want to have and I'd carry it around for a while. Eventually over time, the feeling of wanting that thing, washes away because I know that it is simply an impulse issue.

I do get concerned when people lay out their budget plans. They spend triple the amount of groceries for just themselves. They actually even make budgets for bad money sinks like weed and alcohol. They never save anything, it's always spending by the paycheck. You'll never know if something will come up that'll require a specific amount of money and you'll find yourself in a tough situation where you are having to decide whether you want the lights on for another month or your car tire needs to be replaced because you've neglected it for so long that the threads are worn.

On desktop Hover Zoom is life changing way to browse memes and gifs. One thing I struggled with when I moved to Lemmy was Hover Zoom support. While it worked with imgur links, these are few and far between. I had given up hope when I finally discovered Imagus works perfectly.

YSK: Just because something is easy for you, does not mean that it is easy.

ETA; Why you should know; everyone has natural talents, everyone has skills they developed with practice or over time. Something that feels easy to you might be difficult for someone else to grasp, or they might have a different background or a different way of doing things. When you show someone else how to do something, or when you ask someone else to do something, you need to set aside your expectations on how they might do that thing, or how quickly, or how well.

Be patient. Understand not everyone comes naturally to every new skill or new talent. Some people have learning disabilities or just a lack of familiarity with skills you consider "basic." And try not to belittle someone for needing extra time to master something you find "simple" or they may never try again!

Edit2: Kind of like how I can't figure out how to edit this to save my life. I've been belittled in the past for being bad at things so my instinct was to delete this, but seeing all the conversation, I couldn't bring myself to do it! Consider me a lesson in action!

It's called hypnopompic hallucination.

Unlike with sleep paralysis, you can move and talk while still seeing it and it will last a few seconds up to a minute which can seem like an eternity.

It usually fades as soon as you turn on the light, but for some very few people it does not and persists even after turning on the light.

Why YSK: because it's very scary and unsettling when it happens and since you can move you don't believe it's sleep paralysis and can't explain it. This might explain many of the "monster or spirit at the foot of my bed" sightings that we often hear mentioned in horror podcasts.

Why YSK: New apps are springing up everywhere, and if you're on a tablet, two column views are helpful.

RSS is a convenient way of getting content without bothering with bookmarks and getting annoyed with ads. I'm on a RSS finding spree, so I've decided to share this with you.

I had checked the box and couldn't figure out why it thought I had 2 notifications when I had none showing, and eventually I realized a bot responded to my posts.

Why YSK: You should know that you can protect yourself as a buyer or a seller as anyone who uses Etsy. It's a very popular sales platform and they're making some changes to prevent class action lawsuits against any shenanigans they might pull against buyers and sellers on the platform. You have the ability to opt out of this to protect yourself; the linked article explains how to do this.

Why YSK: Doing so can change your feed and experience drastically.

I typically sort by local/all: active, where I see a mixture of memes, news, and discussions. But I switched to all: hot, and I was shocked by just how homogeneous my feed became. It was pretty much entirely memes and computer discussion. Obviously this isn't always the case. But, I could see someone who always sorts by hot not realizing the diversity of the site.

So, if you're a little bored with your feed, or just want to see different posts, then try different sorting methods. Even if you're not, try it anyway. You might like what you find - or you might go back to your default.

Whisker fatigue causes stress and overstimulates their senses. Using a flat bowl or plate will relieve this issue and allow your cat to eat all their food without stress.

You can also search for "whisker fatigue" bowls specifically made for cats.

I've made a number of improvements since the last time I was posting about my extension. The update is now available on both Firefox and Chrome web stores.

TLDR: See the respective download pages on Firefox & Chrome. The screenshots and features list are mostly self-explanatory.

Note on versions:

• Firefox has a more recent 1.2.1 version, because my build script missed some files while uploading v1.2.0. It doesn't look like Chrome had this issue.
• I'm uploading v1.2.2 to both stores today, which will bring the two missing features to Chrome as well. After 1.2.2, all browsers should have the same features. See below for details.

So how is this different from other similar extensions?

You may have noticed the extension's name changed to be more generic (and include Kbin 🥳). I'm trying to make this a more well-rounded extension, and that means I've incorporated some features from the other extensions, in my own way.

Lemmy Links, Kbin Links, and the other forks:

This is a great extension that replaces links on your page with versions that go to your home instance. However, in order for this to work, it needs to recursively check every element on your page whenever DOM content (the stuff the browser is reading) changes. This is somewhat resource intensive, and while testing I ran into lag and freezing issues. As such, I decided to not include this functionality in the same way.

Instead, I've added a right click context menu that does the same thing. This way the user can pick which links they want the extension to convert, and it's a lot more efficient resource wise. While it's an extra click, I felt this was a reasonable compromise. However, I'm open to feedback!

NOTE: The context menu is available on Firefox, and it will be available in Chrome in about a week, depending on when they approve my update.

Lemmy Home Instance Helper

This is another extension which checks if you are logged in to an instance, and it creates a button to the search page if you are not. As my extension creates a button on any foreign instance, the search page is only helpful when a community hasn't been loaded into your home instance yet (ex. because you're the first one to try accessing it).

To deal with this, my extension modifies the "Community not found" pages with more instructions, as well as buttons to trigger the fetch process or to open the community elsewhere. See this screenshot for an example. Again, open to feedback!

As always, I'd love to collaborate with other people while building this. I'm still cleaning up my code, but feel free to look at the GitHub. If this extension gets popular, I will definitely need help for translations and for things like getting the extension on Safari (I don't have a recent Apple device to sign the extension with).

Note on permissions:

• The current versions request "Access to all sites". This is because the extension needs access to any page that contains "/c/", "/m/", or "/post/" in order to create the sidebar buttons. While the extension only looks for those pages, it will show up as "Access to all sites" when installing. Once I have a proper welcome message and settings page, I plan on making this permission optional so you can just use the popup menu if you would like.

Summary of Recent Changes:

• Added support for Kbin
• Fixed issue where button wouldn't load when navigating to a community within Lemmy (available on Firefox, should be on Chrome in a week).
• (NEW) Right-click context menu on Lemmy/Kbin community links to let you open them directly. You can test them out here: https://lemmy.ca/post/1282303 (available on Firefox, should be on Chrome in a week)
• (NEW) Information and buttons added to "Community Not Found" error pages to let you fetch the community or open it elsewhere.
• Updates to sidebar button to state the current selected instance and provide more detailed instructions as a dropdownList
• Refactored the code to remove more unnecessary permissions.
• Another pile of bugfixes, UI improvements, and better wording for instructions.

Future Plans:

• This is complete and will be in v1.2.2. ~~Bringing over the new changes to Google Chrome. Since chrome requires Manifest 3, I still need to iron out some issues with the service workers. The missing features are all related to the background processes that are running on the Firefox version~~
• Pushing to other browsers: Microsoft Edge & Opera are still reviewing v1.2.0. Unfortunately, I don't have any immediate plans for Safari, as I don't have a device that can sign the extension. I am looking into getting help for that.
• Setting up a proper Welcome page, Settings page, and Options menu to allow users to turn off features that they don't like. This will also let me make "access to all sites" optional.
• Finishing the translations' setup so that people can contribute other languages to the extension.
• Adding an option to save your own instances to the popup, for those that have multiple home instances.

There's been an add-on called Privacy Pass for a few years now. This plugin gives you 30 passes for CF and 5 passes for hCaptcha when you solve one. For example, once you solve 1 captcha for Cloudflare, you will not see 30 captchas again! It will automatically pass.

The good thing is, it's perfectly legal. Powered by Cloudflare and hCaptcha. Valid for Chrome and Firefox.

A good post about the kinds of arguments people use online, including tactics which are about the argument itself or some of the people involved in the argument, as opposed to being about the argument's supposed topic.

You should know this to, one, avoid pointless "debates" where no actual issues get debated, two, to improve your own debate style to focus on the issues that need to be debated most, and, three, to see when others are merely acting like they're debating without actually debating the core issues the debate is supposed to be about.

Why YSK: Online platforms, particularly some very prominent offenders, may artificially spike prices before creating "discounts". Whether this is intentional or the result of third party sellers fighting amongst themselves, I cannot say. Either way, don't blindly purchase something because of a deal (camelcamelcamel is great to see price history if you just care about Amazon). Besides, if your sole motivation to purchase something is based on a discount, you might be better off cutting consumption instead.

Why YSK: after yesterday's security incident many instances have reset the session tokens which your browser remembers. This is causing issues.

You need to clear cache / cookies / app storage, etc... to eliminate any login problems or problems staying logged in.
