Hi,

I use GrapheneOS with no carrier, just VoIP numbers, which is fine as long as I have an internet connection. But I need mobile broadband for when I have no wi-fi. Michael Bazzell suggests using a data plan in his book. Now, there's no such a thing in my country but I can subscribe to Silent.Link, which does the same. The thing is, I don't understand how using mobile broadband is different from using a regular phone number from a carrier, as both use GSM towers and stuff.

tl;dr What should I know before purchasing a data plan?

I've just recently moved to Lemmy, and so far I'm enjoying it quite a bit. However, I've been thinking about the privacy issues whe DMing someone here.

Since this is a federated service, when you DM someone you have to trust both your server's admin, as well as the recipient's. Not that I particularly trusted reddit, but at least it was 1 corporation with (hopefully) some solid security procedures in place, and potential penalties for data breaches. Whereas in Lemmy, it might just be 2 random guys.

I've added an age key to my profile, in the hopes to make people aware of this issue. As well as giving them an option, if they wish to contact me privately.

I know, it's not user friendly. But it's the only way I could think of that wouldn't rely on email + GPG. Does anyone know of a better solution?

EDIT: I also realise that not having signing capabilities might be an issue... So maybe reverting back to good ol' GPG is a better option?

Hi All,
I would like to choose a new email provider, where security and privacy of the email is one of my main concerns (nothing to hide, but want to keep my data private, differently than what happens with the major providers). I have read maaany posts and websites guides but I am still confused. I am happy to pay a euro or so /month, so I had reduced my choice to Mailbox, Posteo, Mailfence. The problem is that each of them has some flows that don't let me go ahead with them!
Mailbox: uses PGP, so not straightforward to send encrypted emails (unlike with tutanota) and to have encryption at rest. No mobile app. Alias reuse after 90 days Posteo: no spam folder. ALias reuse after 24 months Mailfence : has no encryption at rest , no mobile app. Not sure about alias reuse

Have you got any comments on the above providers and /or other suggestions (except for Tutanota and Protonmail)? thank you, appreciated!

You can use https://github.com/victornpb/undiscord to mass delete either your entire account/a server/a channel's messages you've send.

I've send an email to Discord regarding this problem and they gave me this answer

We try to balance the interests other users have in a conversation, as well as the ability for us to provide the service as a whole. Discord is a communications service and its users have a legitimate interest in having access to content sent to them. Consistent with GDPR, Discord balances the privacy interests of the user against the interests other users have in a conversation and the ability for us to provide the service as a whole. Because of how Discord works, content is sent to other users, and those users rely on having access to that content. If a given text channel were suddenly missing important context, it would be confusing to other users or possibly mislead those users about what happened in that conversation.

..

Your Data Package should help you identify any messages, images, or files that you would like deleted in spaces that you currently cannot access. If you provide us with a list of the Message IDs and the corresponding channel IDs that contain personal information, we will gladly work to delete the messages you identify.

Who's going to be the first to send them about a million message IDs?

Me, I have a low threat model so I mainly try to stay away from proprietary stuff when possible (Chrome, Edge ect) I use an eclectic mix of browsers.

I use Vivaldi (I know it's not entirely FOSS but I like the customizability of it), for my amnesiac browsers I use Firefox Focus on Android, and LibreWolf on PC, and for when I want as much anonymity as possible I use Tor with Orbot active routing traffic to Switzerland.

I used to use Brave Browser a lot because I like the user interface but I kinda got turned off by all the crypto stuff they've been peddling. And as far as I know, Bromite hasn't been updated in quite some time (please elighten me if I'm wrong about that I've been out of the loop for a while) , and I was weirded out by the developer's statement "I'll get around to it sometime."

Mull is great but very slow to search imo, when I search for something it takes a long time to load. Or it takes a long time to load a website. It could be internet speed but other browsers work just fine, and I've tested Mull on other WiFis.

I sometimes also use DuckDuckGo but the search results are so bad that I just find myself searching google to find what I want. No offensive if anyone uses those I personally just haven't found much use out if them.

So what browsers do you use for privacy and security?

Edit: Sorry for the long post and edited for clarity.

Hi, I would like to find a bank or a privacy friendly payment method, not able to review every purchase I did.

I thought to several alternatives :

1° Find a bank explicitely dedicated to data privacy (names ?)

2° Open an account in a bank located in Switzerland as it's the world strongest regulation for data privacy ? 3° Use a masked card or virtual number card ?

4° Find a data privacy friendly online payment platform (name ?)

5° Use crypto or cash lol ?

Any advise about these options ? Would you recommend other options ? Also I'm located in Europe if you know specific offers in the EU market related to that concern.

And if there is a migration tool from onenote to the alternative that would be even better.

I have nothing against Signal. I just don't have access to a phone number right now. I fully intend to use the Signal when I get a number. I know there is no silver bullet, no absolutes in the privacy world but I'm looking for any messengers that are generally considered to be private and secure on Android that I can try to convince my friends and family to use. I have a mid - low threat model, it's just the thought of giving the Zuck anymore of my family's data makes my skin crawl.

So, are Apple operating systems actually considerably better in terms of privacy? I’ve been considering making the switch for both privacy and security reasons, but I’m not really sure it’s worth the cost and hassle. I’m currently on an iPhone (recently switched because I had a Pixel 7 with… issues, but that’s longer story) and I’m trying to decide if it’s worth it to fully switch over to the Apple ecosystem.

I'm using KeePass currently, since I don't really want to use anything publicly hosted. But I was curious to see what other people have been using!

I am just curious what the state of android auto alternatives are at this point.

As much as I would like to use GrapheneOS I would find it quite hard to part with Android Auto / Apple CarPlay. I am not expecting Android Auto to be one of the apps to be available in sandboxed gapps, but I would like to see a viable alternative that is better than using OsmAnd with my phone mounted to the dashboard.

I'm currently running an OpenWRT fork that is getting old and hasn't been updated in awhile. I may try to put mainline OpenWRT on it, but also looking for alternatives.

Any replacement probably needs to have external antennas. I use a directional yagi antenna I made for 2.4GHz for better reception. What's the word for a good deal and feature combo when you're not a triple-A gamer? Anyone running a Linux that is not OpenWRT and worth checking out?

I've switched to Firefox, proton mail and calendar, but what about google docs and drive? ty guys

The same way you can hide your location with the proper use of a VPN, I would like to host a website, but have proxy the server with a "VPN" to the outside world.

The goal is to make it impossible to find where the server is located.

VPN is the wrong tool. Are there services like VPNs that could do this?

Anybody out there using Mullvad's browser? If so what's your impression so far?

I've only just discovered it and started playing with it a bit, but was curious on this group's opinions/experience with it.
