I was looking at the new Doom: The dark ages and was astounded by the fact that it's a 100% price increase over the predecessor (at least here in the EU) and can't really explain it. I mean, is it really twice as good and as good an investment? Using a inflation calculator the price of eternal now would still be way lower than the 80eur asked.

But seriously, tongue in cheek aside, is it reasonable to expect the 6xxx series will move to a new node and offer a bit more impressive of an uplift. This seems like a generation to sit out?

The claim that “the RTX 5090 is overkill for 99% of people” is an exaggeration. While I don’t have an exact figure, the new 5090 is excessive if gaming is your only goal. If you’re solely focused on playing video games, you shouldn’t buy this card. Obviously, there are exceptions; I am not saying you cannot buy this card; I am just providing guidance for people who are unsure and still choosing between 5080 and 5090.

From what I’ve seen, NVIDIA has positioned the 5090 as a professional-grade device. You can argue that Nvidia has a dedicated line for it, which is correct, but what other opinion can I have if they price it as a professional card? For basic and slightly richer gamers there’s no real benefit in choosing the 5090.

Many people are getting swept up in the hype due to reviews and marketing that highlight the card’s gaming performance and the history of the xx90 series. However, keep in mind that many who purchase high-end GPUs often replace them within three years, even a year (exceptions apply). Is spending $2,000 truly justified in that context?

If you’re building a new PC and have the budget for a 5090 but will only be gaming, I recommend opting for a 5080 instead. You could then use the extra $1,000 to invest in a better motherboard, CPU, RAM, and other components. That’s a significant amount of money to save. Considering that you are not rich and simply cannot afford it, the purpose of this post is to provide guidance between those deciding between 5080 and 5090; all I am saying is that it is better to get more expensive RAM or MOBO for the cost.

If you disagree, feel free to share your thoughts.

Thank you!
