How can users confidently verify that a FOSS application is running from its published source code? Is there a easy way to check this, or is this based of checksum and hashes?

So i just saw the post here about harmonoid. Very good looking app, but it's only for a local music library.

I have mounted the iscsi disk that i also use for my plex library so i could just use harmonoid to play my plex music.

But that's not what i want. I want to be able to use the playlists i make on plex, use the files for which i made custom metadata etc.

I know the plexamp app is available on linux. But i see that it's basically just the android app ported to linux and the whole UI is absolute garbage for a desktop imho.

So does someone know a good open-source desktop music player that syncs with my plex library and playlists? I really like symfonium on my android phone for it's customizations but it's not available on linux...but something like that? Or something like harmonoid but with plex support?

I've been using it for almost two years now, and I'm not going back.

It's based on a spare Blackberry Q10 keyboard and a custom Arduino-compatible board that reads the keyboard matrix and outputs it as USB HID to the phone. From the viewpoint of the phone, it's just a regular USB keyboard, so no special software is needed.

But I do use a custom virtual keyboard to have just two rows of symbols that are not natively on the keyboard, as I didn't want to add another layer of rarely used symbols that I'd have to memorize.

(On the image you can see Ubuntu with XFCE4 running on it. I chose Ubuntu because it's what was easiest to get running in a chroot jail on the phone. I'm using VNC to display the GUI. I even managed to get FEX (x86/x64 emulator) and Wine running, so it runs x86/x64 Linux and Windows apps.)

Well, I have to say that Harmonoid is the best one I've found, it has a ton of cool features, it works and it allows you to be able to see your collection by album and it doesn't use Electron. Right now its development has stalled a bit but it's still pretty much in good shape, though.

I want an app that reminds me to take a 2 minute break every 30 minutes to rest my eyes. The native clock app doesn't let me choose how many breaks I want to have between my focus session. I am not interested in the features of focus sessions themselves like muting notifications and calls since I don't get any, nor do i want to use a 30 timer on repeat. I like the idea of focus sessions better, however I think it could be even better than how it currently is.

I would prefer to have an app that can do this and have some other clock related features that I can explore and use at my discretion, or be some multipurpose app that also happens to allow use of focus sessions.

I'm not complaining, but I didn't realize how much work it was. It makes me really respect the people who do it on a regular basis.

For example:

• You know how to use your software, but other people don't. So you need to write documentation.
• You can just modify the source files, but it's impractical for everyone to do that. So you need to add a config file.
• You can just drag the output files into place, but that's impractical for everyone to do. So you need to package it.
• You trust yourself, but distro maintainers rightfully don't. So you need to package your source code and configure the package to compile it.
• You will abide by your idea of how the software should be used, but other people might not. So you need to pick a license.

Sometimes I think there must be an easier way, but I can't think of any. I guess it probably gets easier with experience.

Hello Everyone! I make chiptunes on trackers which are quite famous for "keygen music" associated with software piracy. My philosophy with the music I make is that all my tracks can be downloaded for free, are copyright free, and most importantly: its source files can be accessed.

The last bit is something I dont see too much of in the music communities (correct me if I am wrong). I would definitely like to see this more popularised perhaps making something akin to "FOSS Music". Under all of my tracks I put a mediafire link to .xm file. I think this would be incredibly useful to creators as there many times where I hear a song and just love a specific instrument or sample they used and would like to use it in my own music.

Awhile ago I started dabbling with espeak-ng and through some trial & error managed to get some fun sounding results, but I had to trial & error as I had difficulty finding advice or guides on using it. Would anyone here happen to have any pointers to more info on how to work with espeak-ng in general?

To be clear, I'm not trying to make it sound more human, and in fact, I like that it doesn't sound that human, which is part of why I'm using it. Machine-speech as its own distinct voice is fascinating & cool to me.

Mainly I'm trying to learn how to adjust some of its enunciation so that it may be more readily understood, and maybe some ways to enable it to vocalize nonsense with slightly more flow rather than flopping over & repeating letters, lol

I feel it's a good idea for those building native clients for Lemmy implement projects like these to run offline inferences on feed content for the time-being. To cover content that are not marked NSFW and should be.

What does everyone think, about enforcing further censorship, especially in open-source clients, on the client side as long as it pertains to this type of content?

Howdy, not sure if this is the right place to ask but I figured this community has the best chance of using libreoffice. I recently started to learn about gpg and decided to try to digitally sign an odf file I created via libreoffice writter. Thought I could do the same with a pdf file but turns out you need a third party ca certification, so now I'm wondering, assuming only open formats can be signed, why even sign an odf file in the first place? Is it just for niche situations or do official/mainstream entities now support that format? Would it be considered legally binding? I heard that microsoft office gained support for the odf format back in 2021 so if the digital signature could still be verified on their end then I don't see a problem. Is that the case? My bad for all the questions I'm just trying to see the usecase for this seems to me that for anything professional signing with a third party ca cert. would be the better option.

But given that we have the source code to Android (AOSP) and the community to collaborate with, couldn't we just create an entire ROM filled with the necessary applications and utilities, all open source, and with modern UI?

It'll take a shit load of time, and effort. Definitely. But maybe if we banded together? A unified OS running only open source software, with the option for Google Services via something like MicroG, so that we don't need to worry.

I'm no expert. I'm just floating an idea. But I'd love to know if this is possible, step-by-step...

Edit: I know custom ROMs are a thing. I use one. I'm just saying, what if we go ahead and make an open source ecosystem that runs under the same project, so that there's a set of services and apps that are free, open source and non-corporate.

I would like to introduce Alexandria, A FOSS ebook reader that I have been working on for a little over a year.

This project was heavily inspired by an existing application for linux called Foliate. However, Foliate lacked some features that I wanted. In particular, cross platform support (Desktop & Mobile), A split screen reader, and cross platform syncing.

While far from complete, I would love feedback on what has been done so far. Currently, only Linux and Windows builds are available. But though utilizing Tauri and responsive UI, the app should be easy to bring across platforms.

Hello everyone.

Currently me and my GF have our finances organized in a Google sheet file (hosted on Google drive), being that file integrated with a Google form.

What we do is having on our cellphones a shortcut to the form, where we input all our expenses, they are directly and automatically registered in the sheet, and on another tab we've built some sort of dashboard based on all the values the form registers.

So given this context, is there any option or group of options that are open source, and that achieve this same purpose / scenario?

If possible everything acessible on a cloud or at least onlinez so we don't lose this flexibility and accessibility on our cellphones.
