Hey Folks, I've made a couple kiosks in the past around the house, but I'm hoping there's an easier solution out there. Previously I'd install raspbian or something on to a pi and then remote into a full-screened chromium to set it up.

Does anyone know of a good OS that theoretically boot directly to a URL with minimal effort? Like I said I can do it manually but I'd like something pre-built for the task.

Bonus points if it would have a web-configurator, I may want to change the URL it's using occasionally and it'd be nice not to have to remote in directly.

I came across everyday topic on Techlore Discussions about free and open source keyboards for Android and discovered this little gem. I run into a need for this type of software frequently but I don't know what it's called or if it exists. I am very adept at Google Sheets and it works great for pulling in data from other places, creating custom little dashboards and forms, etc but where it's not particularly good is storing relational data for example "This book is written by author" and then having "author" be some other entity with its own attributes.

Now of course, there's SQL but using SQL requires learning SQL syntax which is much more complex. Plus, you have to define a schema and changing schema after you've made the db can be complicated. Not to mention if you use SQL, now you need some kind of front-end to the SQL to make it more friendly to a user even if they would be fine at their skill level managing google sheets.

There are many great CRMs, CMSes, and other systems (I have used Drupal in the past for this niche), but they are often much more difficult to customize than Google Sheets and focused more on data storage/retrieval and less on using that data to calculate things, make graphs etc.

I know AirTable exists, it seems closer to what I want to use, but of course it is not OSS. What other "middle ground" or 'more powerful sheets' tools are out there, and are any OSS?

I've gotten pretty far using FOSS tools when it comes to making games, but I would like something like Substance Painter so I can fully dabble into 3D.

Nothing AAA quality or very professional, I just want something that works good enough for my indie games lol.

An alternative to AutoDesk Fusion360 for 3D print modeling.

Ideally with native Linux support but I'm more concerned with getting out from under AutoDesk's thumb than I am with using wine.

Blender seems like the obvious choice, but it's not really built for 3d printing.

It's looking like FreeCAD may be about as good as it gets unless someone here has some other suggestions.

I've been sitting jobless, graduated with a useless degree and no motivation or direction since about a year. I have not completed any projects yet, so I have nothing to show. I contribute a little bit of here and there testing GitLab features and NixOS bugs and packages.

The project I'm working on right now is a half-assed SvelteKit personal portfolio with badly designed Tailwind components - I've started it last December and it's still pending. Done a few React project here and there and quit it halfway. Same story for backend in Gin and ExpressJS. I've also left my SQlite clone and TUI text editor incomplete.

I was thinking of working with an open source maintainer who can mentor me in any project that can teach me transferrable skills while also not being very niche, like Vulkan or DSP-related. It doesn't necessarily have to be web-dev, but if so, I'd like to favour server-side. I was thinking of Forgejo, but my previous experience with GitLab is making me consider avoiding it. I was also thinking about Windowmaker and Hurd, but they're both going to be way too difficult and also niche.

If I had to be honest, I suck at all languages, but I have played around with Ruby, C, C++, Java, JS, TS, Lua, OCaml, Guille, Go and Python. A little bit of everything. Also a little bit of Docker, Nix, and basic Linux terminal.

Most of the problems in the current internet landscape is caused by the cost of centralized servers. What problems are stopping us from running the fediverse on a peer to peer torrent based network? I would assume latency, but couldn't that be solved by larger pre caching in clients? Of course interaction and authentication should be handled centrally, but media sharing which is the largest strain on servers could be eased by clients sending media between each other. What am I missing? Torrenting seems to be such an elegant solution.

The Molly fork of Signal now has a variant that supports UnifiedPush, but it requires a helper called Mollysocket to be installed on a server somewhere. I can't get my head around the (we'll call them 'lean') docs, and I've never encountered such a helper for other UP apps. They just ask what to attach to, and they attach.

Has anyone fought through this?

My question in FOSS is whether, or how the license applies, if anyone can clarify it for me. I'm not going into a legal battle, I just am having issues rectifying the licensing with my expectations.

Also, ia most FOSS is written this way, with an expectation that organizations have to pay for licensing to use the software?

The issue below is for AGPL and PDFCreator. AGPL, if I read it correctly, seems to restrict restrictions on the license.

I work as MSP for an entity who uses PDFCreator, quite possibly based on a previous license.

I can't otherwise explain the use or make changes myself, other than it is used as a PDF printer on user desktops to create digital documents.

What I can say is that we had recently attempted to automate the process of installing it with new computers. We ran into a minor hiccup and contacted their support for assistance. The response was that the program is not intended for free use in a corporate environment and that we will need to purchase licenses.

While I take issue with their determination and restriction of the use, it is their software and they make the rules. I'm not sure if they are violating the GPL, but I'd like some understanding if anything has a different interpretation.

We will most likely just use the built in PDF creator. A loss for the FOSS footprint, but not something I can control.

I've seen some comments about how "gitlab bad" or whatnot, why do people prefer Codeberg over GitLab?
