It’s somehow been three months since @[email protected] and I agreed to take over moderation of this community, and we’ve not really had to do anything other than keep an eye out for reports. It’s not exactly been a taxing job, so firstly thank you stitchers for being so undramatic!

But that all happened while I was still super ill and to be honest most of November and December is like a weird fever dream. So I kind of did not do the one thing I said I’d do at the time: post some prospective community rules.

Basically what I’m thinking is we want to have something written down that we can point to just on the off-chance of misbehaviour, but at the same time we don’t need anything draconian or super specific while we’re so small.

Since I’ve already been through this process with [email protected] and there are even quite a lot of people here who are in there too, I think it makes sense to maybe start off with similar rules to the ones the knitters agreed and then diverge if we need to.

Main concerns over there were:

  • encouraging people to add pattern info to their posts and
  • making sure we have a rule in place to allow removal of ads

On that second point, it was generally agreed that active members of the community should be free to advertise their shops and products in context, but a complete stranger barging in to post a straight-up ad and then leave should be removed. Basically kind of vibe-based, depending on if you look like a spammer or not, which works fine for a small community tbh.

I’d love to hear from community members on this. Are you ok just following the template from /c/knitting for now? Is there something more specific to us you’d also like to see included in the official rules? Or do you maybe disagree with one of those two things above and want us to rethink?

Input very much welcome, thank you!

And for a bit more of a fun thing, we have a random community banner and icon that I guess the original owner just googled on the day and never thought about again. In /c/knitting I made a banner featuring some recent FOs that had been posted by the most active members, and that was pretty popular.

I’d be happy to knock up something similar for here, but also want to throw it open in case anyone else would like to give banner design a go! Maybe we’ll say if nobody else comes up with something by the end of March I’ll go full collage mode with our FOs, that gives time for a few entries if you fancy it?

We'll also need an icon and I did not make the knitting one so am officially looking for ideas of what we could use. Actual images, vague concepts, all assistance welcome!

Thank you for bearing with this wall of text. Now get back to stitching!

Stitchy friends! Since makers tend to make more than one sort of thing, and we crafters need to stick together, here's a list of fellow creative communities for your navigation pleasure.

For each craft I'll include the current most active community first as well as alternatives, and add each with their full URL as well as local links for Lemmy and Kbin users respectively.

This is going pretty well except I think I picked two shades of orange that are too similar. This pattern doesn't actually tell you which colors to use it just says it's designed to use whatever you already have lol

Hey everyone! I have finally released the next update for ClickStitch; a new page for converting any image into a cross-stitch pattern!

🧵 You'll be able to preview the palette (currently supports DMC threads) and how many stitches are required for each thread. Then upload to start tracking progress!

📷 Sometimes if the image is high detail the resulting image can get grainy, so I have added an adjustable smoothing functionality which will hopefully reduce the amount of noise!

Let me know if there are other features you think would be useful to you.

🔗 That's not all! Now there is also a share page for projects, so other can keep track of your progress but also to preview the entire history of your stitches.

For example, for my Templar Knight pattern:

Simply move the progress bar into the past!

Would love to see your projects using the share feature! ❤

I decided to take a break and try something a little easier with this Maneki Neko pattern!

This one may be done now lol I'm still trying to decide if it needs a border before I wash and iron it for framing

Getting close to finishing the black for this section. You can see the outline of the two characters and some of the bar. (Cloud and Tifa in Seventh Heaven)

I thought I would be done by now, but I'm still slogging through this blue spotlight with like 6 different shades of blue in it lol

I'll get there soon though!

I love cheeky cross stitch, this was a free pattern found on the DMC website, then I chose a font I liked for the words. I think it came out great!

Not much of an update as I've mostly been filling in the bottom section, which has like 8 different versions of blue in it lol but I'm making decent progress! I'm hoping to be done with this one in about another week!

Upgraded my frame. Got a Q snap with the 14" extensions. So I can now work in portrait mode which benefits this particular pattern. Also because of the way the pattern printed out I'll be working on this in thirds. This is the middle third. There's a lot of black...

#FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem
I got this one off of a #FlossTube video on YouTube awhile back-- Steering wheel covers repurposed as #GrimeGuards for #CrossStitch or #Embroidery! Probably for small #Quilting projects, too. These came from #DollarTree & only cost a few dollars. They fit pretty snuggly around my largest Q-Snap frame, too. 😄

I can't call this one fully original because I did use the Bing Image Creator AI website to generate the initial artwork.

After generating the image I converted it into a pattern on Floss Cross

If you hadn't already guessed, this is a Prince pattern! I'm making it as a custom piece for a friend, but it's also a good chance to test out a homemade pattern before I try a bigger completely original pattern after this!

#FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem I guess this may be more of a #Hack than anything, but it helps keep #Embroidery scissors from being quite so easily lost. Mini split rings can b found in the #Jewelry making section of most department & #Craft stores. Attach one 2 one loop on your scissors & attach a key chain (I found mine in the jewelry making section 2) with a larger split ring 2 the mini split ring. Voila! Scissors that are far less likely to walk off! @lemmy_stitch @crossstitch

#FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem An after market cup holder/console organizer that normally would fit between your vehicle's console & one of your seats. BUT those who #CrossStitch, #Sew, #Quilt, #Knit, etc, can fit it between the arm of their couch or recliner & their seat cushion 2 organize small things or 2 use as on #ORT collector! Normally costs $10 or less & can b found in most automotive accessories sections of department or automotive tools stores @lemmy_stitch @crossstitch

And new project started. That thumbnail has seen some things... First time using yellow Aida. Kinda like it. Much easier to work with than black. And this is another pretty big stitch so I'm glad I won't need the light under the project.

I have a HUGE favor to ask of all my #StitchyFriends...

BASIC #StitchingSafety states that one should refrain from holding #PinsAndNeedles in one's mouth while working.

Unfortunately, this has been a #BadHabit about 40 years old now.

If you all would be so kind, PLEASE remind me periodically that my #Embroidery needle doesn't belong in my mouth while #Stitching.

My poor, sore tongue thanks you.

#FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem I actually got this one off Facebook awhile back. Florescent #FishingLine! Great for #Gridding in #CrossStitch or #Basting in #Quilting or #Sewing. It's bright enough 2 be seen, but slippery & strong enough that your needle won't pierce it while #Stitching. If I remember correctly, it comes in more than just neon yellow, too. Can be found in almost any #SportingGoods department or store. @lemmy_stitch @crossstitch @quilting @sewing @christianstitchers

#FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem

Mechanics normally use a #Mechanics Telescoping Magnetic Pick-Up Tool 2 pick up small bolts & other metal that have fallen as they work, but those who #CrossStitch, #Sew, #Quilt, etc., can use it to pick up lost pins & needles so they don't wind up goosing someone when they sit on the couch. 😅 Can be found in almost any automotive store or automotive tool section in Walmart. Some versions even have flashlights on the end! @lemmy_stitch @crossstitch

#FantasticCrossStitchToolsAndWhereToFindThem
This is a Monster Dual Adjustable Dashboard Car Mount - Normally for two cell phones or one large one for use in a vehicle. But I found it and immediately knew it would help me immensely when I #CrossStitch because it's compact and it takes up far less room than my tablet's case/cover stand. You can find it at Advance Auto at https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/monster-double-vision-2-in-1-foldable-dash-mount-2mncm0112b0a2/12252355 or on Amazon
