What is Inktober?

Inktober is a yearly art event intended to improve your inking skills. Every day, there's a prompt which everyone will draw with either ink on paper or digital inking

From the main site:

Jake Parker created Inktober in 2009 as a challenge to improve his inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavor with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year.

What to do

The main two ways to participate are to draw daily like a marathon or every second day like a semi-marathon. The operative word being marathon. It doesn't have to be your best piece of art or even something you're proud of in any way. As the creator of this community, I know quite a bit of what I create will be absolute trash. I'm ok with this though.

This community

A daily post will be pinned at the top to round up each days work. One may either make a post to the community, or comment on the pinned post.

Want to mod?

Feel free to contact me if you're up to help mod this community.

Rules

  1. Be kind Constructive criticism at most. This is a strictly positive community meant to keep a habit for a period of time. If you don't enjoy someones art and can't phrase any advice in a supportive way don't speak up. This will be strongly enforced with bans if need be. A dictatorship of kindness. You may, however, ignore this rule for any post made by @[email protected]. Please, feel free to insult me so terribly that I'll think about your takedown on my deathbed

  2. No AI-Generated work

  3. Submissions must meet the theme of this community Whether on paper or digital the creation must be inked. This means black and white with an ink pen or ink pen digital brush

The prompt for December 19th to the 25th is "Wrapped"!

"It’s all about capturing the act of wrapping in your art! Picture an ancient mummy entangled in dusty linen, a cozy scarf wrapping snugly around someone’s neck, or even a gift mid-wrap, with paper and ribbon spiraling into place. Maybe it’s nature’s version—a snake coiled tightly around its prey or vines wrapping around an abandoned building. Think beyond objects and explore how emotions or stories can be wrapped up in a scene.

And speaking of wrapping, as the year creeps toward its end, it’s time to think about your Inktober Wrapped! What would your art recap look like? A visual montage of your favorite prompts? A character design wrapped in the elements of your creative growth? Dive into this week’s prompt and wrap up something truly unforgettable! 🎨🖋️"

The prompt for December 12th to the 18th is "Gingerbread"!

"Let your imagination run wild as you explore the sweet, spiced possibilities of gingerbread! From intricate cookie houses adorned with candy to whimsical gingerbread characters that tell a story, there are endless ways to bring this theme to life. Maybe you'll illustrate a cozy gingerbread village nestled in powdered sugar snow, a daring gingerbread adventurer exploring a candy forest, or even a dramatic showdown between a gingerbread knight and a marshmallow dragon.

But why stop at the traditional? Switch it up! Picture futuristic gingerbread robots, edible spaceships crafted from sugar and spice, or even a reimagining of gingerbread as towering skyscrapers in a confectionery cityscape. Let the charm of gingerbread inspire you, but don’t be afraid to crumble the mold and bake up something completely unexpected! 🖋️✨"

The prompt for December 5th to 12th is "Krampus"!

"This week’s Inktober 52 prompt is here, and it’s time to get festive! Imagine a figure sneaking through the snow, a sack slung over their back, and a trail of little footprints leading to cozy chimneys. But wait—those aren’t reindeer hooves on the roof, and that sack isn’t full of toys…

Krampus is the ultimate “naughty list” enforcer, bringing a delightfully spooky twist to the holiday season! This horned, furry figure hails from Alpine folklore and traditionally tags along with St. Nicholas on December 5th, Krampusnacht. While jolly old St. Nick hands out treats to good children, Krampus wields his birch sticks and sack to dole out punishment to the naughty ones (or so the legend goes!). Once feared, Krampus has become a festive favorite in modern celebrations, with parades, costumes, and plenty of mischievous holiday cheer. Think of him as Christmas with a little extra bite!

This week’s prompt is KRAMPUS! Let your pens and brushes bring this dark, mischievous holiday legend to life. Will your Krampus be terrifying, mischievous, or just downright strange? Grab your sketchpads and let’s conjure some holiday havoc! 🎄👹"

Huge thanks to the mods for hosting inktober on lemmy and for approving this post. Also thanks to everyone who participated. I loved seeing everyone's art.

I want to keep using prompts, but in a broader way than ink52. So I'm starting [email protected]. We'll begin the first week of January. For now, if you visit the community, I'm soliciting ideas for prompts. That can include a subject, but it can also be a technique, medium, color, or any other kind of inspiration. All types of visual art are welcome. Hope to see you there.
