23, have some construction experience but nothing with wiring. Just wanted some input from other electricians on what I can expect , just had a few questions

What are some go to tools I should obtain ?

How Dangerous is being an electrician ? Assuming you follow all the precautions and aren’t just fucking around.

Any regrets on choosing electrician as a career choice?

Thanks!

Hey y'all, I finally signed up and start my 18 months electrician course.

I'm pushing 40 and have held a remote work desk job for a while now. Nothing but white collar experience but was always interested in a trade.

I looked into many trades but most of them suggested electrician and after looking into it, I flipped the switch and signed up.

From up north Quebec, I'm starting soon and am mighty nervous since I am good at maths and have a great work ethic but I know absolutely nothing in the field at the moment.

Just needed to get that off my chest, thanks for reading.

Was working on 277 lighting today. Installing switches . Occupancy sensors . Capping wires off. I’m a 21yr second year. Forman told me to make sure everything was capped off and closed up. I was not informed by Forman or journeyman’s they were gonna be energizing B side lighting today… but anyways. So they turned shit on . And I got switch wires coming out the wall not capped off that I didn’t get to yet. Long story short. I kinda raised hell about it and I’m just glad I didn’t get hurt or my coworkers. Everyone knew I was in the right. I told them I was fucking pissed and the communication was just fucked. Anyways. Got dam I don’t want to get hit by 277 I have just started living lol. And I don’t get payed enough for that shit .

Today’s the day. NJ. 4 long years, one year of school, many, many companies… wish me luck. Stayed up all night the past 3 nights studying, going through the NEC, watching Mike Holt, and taking his practice tests. Let’s see how this goes👍🏼

So I got moved from one job to another and today is my first day on this new project. So I brought my hand tools home, and on the way home from work I stopped and got some groceries. I put them in the bed of my truck and carried them in and specifically remember thinking "you better grab those tools."

I go out to start my truck and open the door and it hit me - no tools in the cab. Fuck. Someone jimmied the door and got in and took them. Fuck fuck fuck. There goes about a grand. I walk into my garage and call my coworker and tell him I might be a few minutes late because I'm gonna have to dig through my toolbox and grab spare shitty tools to get by for a week or three. So I dig for a minute, walk back into my house, and bam, they're sitting in my living room. Not in the spot I normally set them but at least they're safe. I have no recollection of carrying them inside but I did carry in a shit ton of groceries....? Idk?? Anyways I don't need any coffee now. My heart was racing. Whew!

I just had my 6-month review as a first-year apprentice at age 43. I was hired with 8 years low voltage experience (7 as a dish network self-employed technician, 1 year security installation) and another 8+ years in the construction trades (6 as a millwright, 2 concrete labor). FWIW, I also have useless degrees in physics and mathematics.

During my review, I was told:

pros: punctual, hard worker, very knowledgeable for my level, stays until the job is finished, fast worker when I get in a groove, and other commendations

con: communication. If you do something other than the way it was intended by the journeyman, don't say "but this is what you told me.."

When I applied, I asked for $20/hr. I was offered $18/hr and told we'd try this out. If things work out, I would receive a raise at my 6 month review.

Today, I received a raise to $18.25, a bonus of $140, and told that we'll have another review in another 6 months where "hopefully we can get some bigger raises".

I live an hour away from the shop which really adds a lot of unpaid time and gas costs. I also live in a desolate area with maybe only 1-2 other shops within an hour drive. I want to move back to the city, but my house is falling apart faster than I could ever hope to repair it, nor do I have the money to make the problem go away. It took years on the market for the previous sellers to find a sucker as foolish as me.

I see the KFC by my work advertising $18/hr for *no experience*, but I have to supply all my own tools and work outfits, dig trenches through compacted clay and rock by hand in the blistering heat, and risk my life atop the tallest ladders and with electrical hazards... for what? The prospect of, after a year of hard labor, making $0.50 more than a no-experience 15-yr old?

What do I do? I'm going into debt working here, but the actual work isn't bad at all. If I leave, this bridge could get burnt and I may find myself without any future prospects whatsoever.

Does anyone know what it’s like to work for the city on waste water? It’s an electrical and instrumentation gig. Is there any upward mobility?
