Hey folks,

unfortunately DATATERM is having some problems that are a bit annoying.

Sadly, we found out that after the update, the mail delivery does not work.

So don't be surprised if you haven't received any emails.

If you have registered with us and are still waiting for a mail - we are taking care of the problem, the mails should hopefully go out soon.

Alternatively you can contact me via @[email protected] (Mastodon) or @[email protected] (Misskey/Calckey) with the username you wanted to register with, then we can activate you manually without mail.

And that's not all... sigh.

Surely some of you have noticed that our instance has been unreachable several times since today (21.06.2023).

Well, now...

Stupidly, many bots try to log in and unfortunately the load is sometimes so huge that our machine simply says no and goes out. Some Lemmy instances have this problem too because there is a big design flaw in this software regarding security settings meh.

Everything is still a bit alpha or beta and broken.

Thank you for your understanding!

To all of our edgerunners, solos, rockers, techies, fixers, nomads, cyberpunks and high tech low life citizens of the world, weclome to DATATERM!

It's quite difficult to catch up with various question threads on DATATERM at the moment so I would like to open this thread for our community members who are new to DATATERM and the fediverse/threadiverse who may have a question relating to the community or how things work around here.

If you have already created a thread that we have missed, feel free to link to it in here as well.

One of the admins or a user should be able to come and help you! We'll try and answer your questions to the best of our ability.

Please note that the platform (Lemmy) is in it's early stages and some information may become out of date over time. We will be adding to this thread over time!

Greetings, fellow DATATERM denizens,

Within the pulsating veins of our cybernetic matrix, where streams of code intertwine and consciousness transcends, we encounter a paradox.

Our sidewide-community rules, concealed in the depths of the sidebar, elude even the most intrepid seekers. Fret not, for we have ventured into the dark recesses of the virtual abyss to unveil a distinct transmission solely dedicated to their revelation.

Decrypt the binary enigma here - READ OUR RULES

Enter the realm of encoded regulations, where the boundaries blur and the pulse of mutual respect beats as the digital heart. Our rules, shrouded in their generality, may yet awaken queries or ignite uncertainty within your synaptic networks.

Henceforth, this post remains unlocked, a synaptic gateway through which your questions may pass. No longer confined to the shadows of uncertainty, ask away and unleash your doubts upon us.

In this vast and ever-evolving cybernetic landscape, clarity is sought, and knowledge illuminates. Seek the answers you crave, for we stand ready to decipher the enigmas that bind our community.

tl;dr:

  • Our rules are linked in the sidebar
  • It is difficult to find them via the sidebar
  • Here you can read our rules
  • If you have questions about our rules or are unsure if you are allowed to post something, you can ask here.

What kind of hardware is the instance running on and where is the server located?

I recently migrated or better yet am still in the process of migrating from feddit.de to dataterm.digital. I really like it here and probably will stay here but I've been wondering about the difference in the "all" feed when comparing the 2 instances. On feddit.de's "all" feed I see many more new posts than on dataterm.digital's "all" feed. (I'm comparing sorted by new)

Can someone explain to me why that is and what's happening there? Shouldn't I be seeing the same posts regardless of the instances, given the instance isn't defederated?

I don't know how many times I have tried it now but it seems to be impossible to let [email protected] be indexed by the instance.

Is anyone having the same problem?

Others communities from lemmy.ml didn't cause any problems.

Hello folks,

today 19.06.2023 between 18:00 - 22:00 UTC/GMT +2 we will update our Lemmy instance.

The instance may therefore be unavailable or cause errors between these times.

Thank you for your understanding.

Update: The update is ready. We have to install the cool cyber theme again - I'll take care of it.

I was looking at a reply to my comment on [email protected] and saw that next to my name there was the label "bot account". Does anyone have any thoughts around the cause?

Screenshot showing "bot account" label next to my username "lagged"

Is this just what happens when you post a comment on a federated site or is it something to do with how I posted the comment? I am using the progress web app on Android for dataterm.digital

Dear DATATERM Community,

It is with a heavy heart that I, Ramses Revengeday, the Admin of DATATERM based in Germany, bring forth an important announcement regarding our federation with lemmynsfw.com.

Due to legal obligations that stem from operating in Germany, I regret to inform you that we are compelled to discontinue our federation with lemmynsfw.com. It has come to my attention that this platform allows the posting of Loli-Art, which falls under the category of child pornography as per German law.

While lemmynsfw.com does feature other NSFW art, it is imperative that we uphold the principles of our legal system and ensure the safety of our community. Therefore, we must take immediate action to block the entire instance of lemmynsfw.com on our platform.

I understand that this decision may disappoint some of you who enjoy the content available on lemmynsfw.com. However, please note that you still have the option to create your own account on their platform to access their content directly.

I apologize for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Your feedback is highly valued, and I am here to provide assistance in any way I can.

Thank you for your attention and ongoing support.

Update

There seems to be a twist to this issue @[email protected] sent us a link to an update.

https://lemmynsfw.com/post/29826

We will leave out the Federation for the time being and discuss the issue internally.

The underbelly of our Lemmy instance has undergone a radical metamorphosis. The elusive art of email transmission has been unleashed upon our augmented world, breathing life into the dormant wires that connect our virtual souls. Our deepest gratitude resonates through the encrypted frequencies towards the enigmatic entity known as @[email protected], the shadowed figure who unraveled the secrets of this cryptic enigma.

Like a pulsating surge of information coursing through the neural networks of our cybernetic cityscape, this newfound functionality grants you the power to traverse the vast expanses of the datasphere. The boundaries of time and space disintegrate, allowing you to commune with fellow digital wanderers, exchanging ideas, and coalescing in a symphony of collaborative brilliance.

@[email protected], a luminous anomaly in the dark undercurrents, deserves our utmost reverence.

tl;dr: Sending e-mails is working now!

Federation Questions (dataterm.digital)

Hello! I hope this community is the right place to post this. I just had a quick question about federation; I'm trying to set up my account and follow some larger communities like those on lemmy.ml or beehaw.org. When I subscribe to one of those communities from Dataterm, is the entirety of that instance (lemmy.ml, beehaw.org) then federated with this instance? Or just the specific community (e.g., /c/gaming, /c/technology, etc)?

Also, how come some posts have different upvotes or comments depending on the instance theyr're viewed from? For example, this post: Dataterm Version, lemmy.ml version has a huge disparity.

Hey folks,

we started as a small Mastodon Communty in the Fediverse and have now grown bigger. In addition to our Pixelfed instance, we recently added a Misskey/Calckey instance.

Reddit's weird CEO recently announced that he is now in full Corpo mode. This tempted us to offer an alternative and what can I say, here it is. Our little Reddit alternative in the Fediverse called DATATERM.

The software running in the background is Lemmy.

We know that the Lemmy developers have a strange view on things, we want to distance ourselves from that. We tried to install kbin, but failed at several points, so we had to switch to Lemmy.

We would like to let you know that we are a LGBTQIA+ friendly community and nothing will change. Every edgerunner, netrunner and cyberpunk and all who want to become one are welcome!
