For New Years, I had compiled a list like this for a bunch of different visuals themed around the holiday. This time, I am going to piggyback on the work done by Crunchyroll. Some of my favorites of this batch include:

  • Gushing Over Magical Girls
  • Jellyfish Can't Swim at Night
  • Oshi no Ko
  • Shangri-La Frontier

No date, visual, or PV released for the series yet. Synopsis from AniList:

Arata has never had a girlfriend, but he has 5 sisters and a brother. One day, his father reveals that he and his siblings aren’t related by blood! Now all bets are off, and Arata’s future promises to be rather nerve-wracking…

A notable thing about this series is that it is based on a manga created by Reiji Miyajima who you might know better as the author of Rent a Girlfriend (he released a commemorative illustration here). It is a series that he publishes to his fanbox account irregularly on the side while Rent a Girlfriend is releasing. As of this moment, I think there are only a little over 20 chapters, so I am unsure if there is more story they plan to adapt that isn't released or if there will be a long delay between this announcement and the premiere to allow for more story to release.

A little change of chart, maybe more accurate for English-speaking audiences.

p.s. I'm posting this 3 days after this was first published, so some shows' numbers may not reflect the quality of the most recent episode.

Premieres sometime in 2024 (I saw some sources that said fall, others don't specify). The new PV is here. Check the ANN article for cast and staff information. Synopsis from AniList:

The slightly strange high school student Murai confessed love to his teacher and otome-game fanatic Tanaka-sensei. She refused by telling him she's not interested in (real-life) long, black-haired boys. The next day, Murai came back with short blonde hair, which made him look just like Tanaka-sensei's favorite game character! A non-stop romantic comedy between a stubborn high school boy and his favorite teacher!

Premieres April 2024. The new PV is here. Check the ANN article for staff information. Synopsis from AniList:

Masaki Fujiyoshi is a stay-at-home spouse and parent. He has fought long and hard with feelings of being a burden to his loving husband, Hiromu, due to his status as an omega—and the difficulty they faced to achieve this domesticity. When their son, Hikari, was born, the family moved to an area better suited for raising children.

Despite their newfound domestic bliss, the family's ties to their past are in tatters. There are people they left behind to pursue the creation of their happy family, and when they begin to return, Masaki and Hiromu aren't quite sure they have good intentions.

Premieres April 2024. The new PV is here. Check the ANN article for character visuals and staff information. Synopsis from AniList:

Hotaru is a 16-year-old high school first-year who has always been ambivalent about love, preferring instead to have a lively life with her family and friends. So when she sees her schoolmate, Hananoi-kun, sitting in the snow after a messy, public breakup, she thinks nothing of offering to share her umbrella. But when he asks her out in the middle of her classroom the next day, she can’t help but feel that her life is about to change in a big way...

This article is was published two weeks ago, but I just found it and thought it was interesting. I get the impression that many lemmy users (myself included) are not heavy users of the major social media platforms out of privacy concerns. However, it would be foolish to ignore the influence they can have.

This article points to something that I was completely blind to before; anime made specifically for tiktok. The platform seems ill-suited to it between the algorithmic feed preventing chronological watching and the lack of monetization, but this project feels almost like a proof of concept more than anything. At least it has been successful enough for the studio to extend the series and continue production past the planned initial run.

It will be interesting to see if this is a trend that continues to grow or if the restrictions of the platform discussed in the article prevent further investment into series like this.

Set to premiere in July. The new PV can be seen here. Synopsis of the first season from AniList:

After inheriting his late grandmother’s failing café, Hayato sees it as a bother and plans to sell it for a quick buck. Until he discovers five beautiful girls staying there! When they beg him to keep the café open, Hayato reluctantly gives in. Can he manage the seaside shop while learning to live with these unruly women?

Premiere is set for April. This is being made to commemorate what would have been Hachiko's 100th birthday this year (he's been a very good boy). There isn't any word on how long episodes will be, but for this type of show, I wouldn't be surprised if it is a series of shorts rather than full length episodes. The ANN article has a brief summary:

In the anime, HACHI has been watching over the city as the symbol of Shibuya station's loyal dog Hachiko statue. HACHI begins to move in present day Shibuya, spending a relaxed and fun daily life with his cheerful friends.

Would you consider this as anime, despite the label in the title?

On to the trailer, it wasn't impressive: The action and low framerate wasn't smooth or comprehensible.

And Japanese Rick's voice felt miscast to me, but as you may know, once a Japanese VA is cast as a particular Hollywood actor, they pretty much have that role for life.

In that clip, we may be listening to the VA who voices Rick in the Japanese dub of the regular Rick and Morty show.

I wouldn't know because I have never watched that dub.

This suit is regarding AMC streaming services (including HIDIVE) selling user's personal information to Facebook/Meta illegally. If you used any of the affected streaming services between January 18, 2021 and January 10, 2024 then you are eligible for part of the settlement. Don't expect more than a coffee's worth of payout though, since that is how these things typically work. I think the most shocking thing here is that there is any accountability at all.

You can see an announcement video that was released here. Synopsis of the first season from AniList:

Tokyo’s brand-new Yuigaoka Girls’ High School has no history, no upperclassmen, and no reputation—its first students are starting from scratch! A team of five girls led by Kanon Shibuya discover school idols, and their hopes to do something with singing begin to grow. They begin the “School Idol Project” with a blank slate and infinite potential. It’s time for their Love Live to take flight!

disclaimer: I am not really familiar with the series and there are tons of Love Live series, so I hope I pulled a synopsis from the correct one.

Previous Thread | Next Thread

A new Monday means it is a new general discussion thread. We are at or near the halfway point of the season for most of the winter shows. I plan on dedicating next week's thread to a midterm report of sorts, so look forward to it! In the meantime, please use this thread to talk about what you have watched recently, any questions you might have, recommendations, or whatever else strikes your fancy. Like usual, a couple examples:

  • Are there any shows with more suggestive eyecatches than Bravern?
  • Is Metallic Rouge some elaborate experiment to see how long an audience will watch pretty nonsense?
  • Is Kensuke from Dungeon Meshi basically a Pokemon that Laios uses to fight?

As always, remember to be mindful of spoilers. If you want to know more about how to handle spoilers in this community, check the guide here (also linked in the sidebar).
