Last time I saw these together she (left) chased him out of the garden at high speed. Apparently they are now best friends and looked annoyed when they noticed me staring at them.

Hainan gibbon

A Hainan gibbon spotted in the Bawangling area of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, south China. The Hainan gibbon is the world’s rarest ape and one of the rarest mammal species on Earth – there are only about 37 of them alive today. In the 1950s their population stood at about 2,000 individuals, but it underwent a severe decline in the late 20th century due to habitat loss and hunting

Fox on the decking [OC] (lemmy.stad.social)

Yes, this is one of the full pictures from when the one used for the community avatar was taken. This is a few years back, and not the same fox as the one in the gazebo. I'll post another one from the same set in the comments.

Either Attenborough's Life on Earth or The Living Planet - not quite sure which one, though I suspect Life on Earth - was the first TV series that got my parents to deviate from the regular bedtime when I was a child in the 1980's...

From last year sometime, I think.

Sorry about the poor picture quiality, but this was well past a reasonable zoom level for my phone.

Apparently, bout 1 in 100k squirrels are born with albinism, which given there are millions of squirrels in the UK alone means there are likely tens of them in the country at any one time. Saw this one in the same park a few times a few years back.

Cat meets fox (lemmy.stad.social)
submitted 10 months ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

It went well. They stared at each other for a bit, and then the cat left. I have more pictures from that encounter which I might post - the cat was creeping along the top of the garden fence to try to sneak up on the fox, and got about to where she is in this picture before she was spotted but the fox clearly just wanted to go back to sleep and didn't do much more than lift its head and stare her down.

Last winter and into spring, this dude was a regular visitor.

You get a sense for the size of Reggie here. Why the young one thought it was a good idea to try to sneak up and see if she could get a jump on Reggie, I don't know, but she did.

It did not work. One (Reggie) was not amused.

Though Reggie was chill enough to just make it clear just how totally not amused one was with some very loud hissing before slowly walking off.

Wild parakeets in London (lemmy.stad.social)
submitted 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

(Near the top)

This is from last February. And, yes, they are wild.

There have been parakeets in the UK for a long time, almost certainly originally escaped/released pets, but for the last 30+ years a significant population have established themselves so most parakeets in the UK today are not pets but born wild.

In my local park, you can often see a bunch of them. Especially during winter when they can't hide as easily in the canopy (but we can hear them all year long).

They've been spotted as far North as Scotland, but the biggest population is in South England.

See here for more about the wild parakeet population

Reggie and the Fox (lemmy.stad.social)

This is from a few years ago. They both stayed there, looking at each other, until Reggie (the neighbour cat, if in doubt...) decided it was best to leave. It was a really hot day, so I guess neither one of them were in the mood for conflict...

This is Reggie (lemmy.stad.social)
submitted 10 months ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Reggie is another neighbour cat. We know its name is Reggie due to its tag. We don't know if Reggie is male or female because the chonky cat has such thick fur it's impossible to tell.

Reggie is shy. This was the first time, after it has come around for years, that Reggie came to the door, and later even stepped inside (a few steps), spurred on by the other cat I've posted pics of.

It's not just my sun sail I've found her on top of.... (she got down of her own accord after some coaxing - jumped down onto the fridge and then the kitchen counter)
