The main features I want are:

  • Import PDFs and annotate them in the app's native format (so that I'll still be able to remove previous changes after I save and re-open it)
  • Quickly add text boxes anywhere on the PDF
  • Draw some basic shapes and lines with different colors (can either be notability-style "draw and hold to make shape" or just a classic "insert shapes" option from the toolbar)
  • Have a page thumbnail option and can search text in the PDF file and quickly go there

I'm a huge fan of changing playback speed when playing videos, and finally got fed up with the cumbersome interface in the official YouTube app on Android (as well as the ads...).

I thought I read that there was a shortcut or gesture that would do it, but can't get anything to work 😥

I'll start:

  • RSS and blogs, news vs. social media
  • XMPP vs. WhatsApp/FB messenger/Snapchat
  • IRC vs. Matrix, Teams, Discord etc.
  • Forums vs. Social media, Reddit, Lemmy(?)

If someone doesn't know what Shazam is, it listens to music playing on the radio or TV and identifies it and helps you find the name/artist.

I was wondering if there open source equivalent, I tried searching google and AlternativeTo but only found Linux desktop apps.

Howdy,

I'd like to share a project I've been working on recently, Plemmy! Plemmy allows you to interact with any Lemmy instance using Python and the LemmyHttp API.

Currently all LemmyHttp functions (POST, PUT, GET) have been implemented.

Feel free to provide feedback or contribute in any way!

For context, Ripcord is a minimal client for Discord and Slack. However, it has had an issue for a few months now, where trying to join voice calls always fails, and the client gets stuck on "Routing..." the issue has gone unaddressed due to the developer having not updated the application since 2021. However, someone on github has made a fix for this issue. I'm posting this here for reference, in case anyone else likes Ripcord as much as I do, and would like to continue using it.

If so, how was the overall experience? Looks like a much better alternative than completely relying on Google Drive and you can't beat the price (free!)

@OpenSource @foss It would be great if we had a LineageOS/GrapheneOS image that would be similar to Linux distros where they could be installed on any Android phone and it would auto download/install all the drivers needed for the phone to be fully functional. I really hope there is some work being done on this in the background.

(Boy I hope cross-posting your own stuff isn’t a no-no or anything. Apologies if it is! But I thought this would be relevant here also, and I hope you all enjoy!)

And today in “The Dimmest Silhouette of a Potentially Less Poop Future”, Mumbo Jumbo, the famous Minecraft redstone creator/general famous Minecraft-player on YouTube released this week what was initially meant to be a video of him just goofing around in “Minetest” a Lua-based, open-source Minecraft-like game that was designed to basically be a base game engine where folks could build their own game onto it using the integrated modding system. But by the end of it, he was having legitimate fun playing with the redstone-analogue mod he downloaded, and openly talked about the waves of nostalgia he got exploring the game in general, as it slightly, but notably, varied from OG Minecraft.

Now, I’m actually a touch less cynical about the way MC has been handled by Microsoft in the past few years than some folks (though the recent debacle about them cracking down on suggestive content and gun mods has me a more than a little worried about them legitimately beginning to overreach beyond sense. As though the single most downloaded video game in existence needs help with its image). But I legitimately think stuff like this is an amazing potential starting point for folks, especially YOUNG folks, to get excited about FOSS gaming. And open source software in general.

Minecraft’s greatest asset was its modability, but its growing monetization in Bedrock Edition, and the general corporate vibes coming off of a lot of its high-level decisions since MS bought it has really taken its toll on that prospect. But with stuff like Minetest, and other games like it that seek to give people free, open-source tools to build and share their creations and passions amongst each other, I think there really stands to be a chance for folks who, like myself just a year ago, never really paid much mind to open-source, community-driven software to have a chance to jump into the scene. And maybe find out they feel better for it.

Discussions welcome in the comments! I don’t expect everyone to share my hopefulness. But I do hope you give it a chance. A measured level of scrutiny is key to any movement, but so are good amounts of positive vibes and aspirations for the future. So if nothing else, I’d love to hear what y’all think about the potential for FOSS gaming in general, and/or what you think FOSS gaming and the greater adoption of FOSS alternatives could look like if fate favours it and/or efforts by the community increase in the future.

Hope you’re having/had a good day!

It is battle tested, standardized, widely used, have open source servers and apps, end-to-end encryption (OMEMO), self-hostable and are low on ressources and federated / decentralized.

I use it with family and friends. Conversations and blabber.im on android and Gajim on Linux. There's also apps for windows and Apple.

Curious if anyone here use it and why, why not?

EDIT: Doh. In these Lemmy times I forgot federated. Added.

Hey everyone,

I am looking for an alternative for OneNote for Linux. A clone would be perfect, the interface of it and the ability to paste pictures into a very wide notes field is great. Please help me!

These messages are from Daniel Supernault, primary maintainer of Pixelfed.

I don’t want to recap the FediDrama here (drama recaps have a way of becoming drama themselves), but I suspect it’s the reason he’s taking a break.

I’ve never met @dansup but I know he’s contributed so much to the Fediverse and OSS communities. I am still a newb myself (Twexit era). But - for the good of the OSS community - would it be too much to ask we show some respect for the pioneers who got us here?

Hi! I am interested in getting a new app for playing music. Until now, I've been on the Spotify paid tier, but I hardly use it lately in order to justify keeping the subscription. I still have quite a few playlists that I would not like losing, though.

I've been looking around, and the only app I've found that's very nice is BlackHole. However, after looking at it closer, I realized that it uses some API from India that only returns Indian music when you try to import/search. I had a good laugh on that one, after seeing all my imported playlists full of Bollywood music!

I continued my search, but I can't really find something that allows you to import playlists from various services. SpoTube is nice, but it takes a long time to play songs (sometimes up to 1 minute or more after pressing the play button).

So, my question: What do you guys use to listen to music?

I'm happy that I have navidrome setup, and it even forced me to make sure all my tags were beautiful and setup how I like them, but it's undeniable that Plex had the upper hand on open sourced music projects.

I don't feel entirely okay with letting Plex have my data with no backup options, but at the same time it's discovery options and ease of use to find "moods radios" and "track radios" are undeniable creature comforts ported from modern streaming services.

If there isn't anything currently, then just let me know. I know the community is growing and with time some of these features may come to be, but since I can't find anything, I'm just curious if I just missed something great and can begin to fully ditch Plex for music.

For those not in the know: here's what I'm talking about.

And for the lazy that just want the gist: "Metadata for music is great and it can be fun to browse or play music based on genre, style, or mood. But maybe you have some obscure artists from Bandcamp or even your high school band in your collection. Those may well not have any real metadata available at all on MusicBrainz, All Music, etc. If there’s no metadata for the genre/style/mood, then that content gets left out of some of the fun.

Your Plex Media Server can perform a “sonic analysis” of your local music files to catalog detailed characteristics about the actual music itself. That data can then be used in a variety of ways, allowing you to see sonically similar artists/albums/tracks, play a Track Radio, or even suggest specific mixes for you, based on what you’ve already listened to.

It’s a powerful tool, allowing you to explore your music library in Plex like never before!"

Any idea for what to use as a media manager? I'm getting ready to go on a small trip and I would like to be able to import all my videos/pictures from an SD card and have them filed based on the meta data. At least by date. I've always done this manually and it's not awful, but there has to be a better way.
