Polaris strikes me as the retelling of a fever dream. I did enjoy The White Ship more than Polaris because it seemed to be a little more cohesive. Either story could easily be the basis for a concept album by Rush or an epic song by Iron Maiden.

I have to admit that I don't much care for these early writings. They are brief and somewhat disjointed, a little too dreamlike to hold my interest. I do hold them in some regard since they show the beginnings of his Dreamlands ideas that take on fuller form in his later writings.

The Doom That Came To Sarnath was my first introduction to the writings of HPL many many years ago. I enjoy re-reading it as much as I did the first time. This time I opted to listen to it on HorrorBabble, the narrater was very good.

I always find myself thinking about little side stories in the same setting. What did the "people" of Ib ever do to deserve the hate of Sarnath? The beings that inhabited Ib seemed to just keep to themselves. They are described as having "bulging eyes, pouting, flabby lips, and curious ears, and were without voices". Is it just simple pure xenophobia that drove the people of Sarnath to kill them all, or were there unstated incursions into Sarnath? The story does does not describe the denizens of Ib as anything other than ugly, and maybe that was enough for the people of Sarnath.

In the end the people of Sarnath got what they deserve, which is a somewhat surprising result considering how deeply xenophobic HPL was at the time of the writing. One would expect a Sarnath apologist viewpoint.

I always feel like Doom has an almost cinematic feel to it. Even though the story is brief the setting is lush and very interesting.

There are currently 70 subscribers to this community thus far but I think we can do better than that! Please tell your friends about us!

And please consider taking part in the book club that Seeker of Carcosa is doing such great work on!

I need to get caught up on the book club. I sputtered out after week one because of some work commitments and travel. I certainly hope that others in the community will switch from lurk mode to active participants. I sincerely appreciate your time and effort to put these readings together and hopefully in the next week or two I can find the time to get caught up.

Be seeing you!

Gorgeous! Is there any chance that you have more build details? A list of parts needed or even perhaps photos or video of your work would be great!

I don't hate it. It makes room to tell new "old" stories without just completely dismissing canon. The idea of a "fixed point in time" is a concept that I think originated with Doctor Who. The Strange New Worlds concept is similar, but instead of a fixed point its a fixed event or fixed outcome.

I do wonder though, how much of this "time pushing back" is actually that? Or is it actually just the "Federation Time Cops" from the far future making sure things happen even if someone successfully meddles with history. I actually kind of hate the concept of time travel being a thing in Star Trek. Leave it to shows like Doctor Who.

There seems to be very little allegory or subtlety in any shows these days. I remember having high hopes for this Prisoner remake based almost solely on McKellen being cast in it. This was my first re-watch after watching it as it aired. I thought I'd give it another chance and maybe pay more attention to see if I missed something. I didn't, what a disappointment.

The Barnes and Noble one is my favorite in terms of looks.

This is a sub to show off your stuff. Whatever it may be. Do you make fine handmade furniture? Do you have a nice record collection? Do you have a special talent? Did you take a picture/video of something interesting? Show me what you got! Upvoting and downvoting is encouraged to drive the coolest stuff to the top.

Please no porn.

My musical tastes are fairly obvious. Classic rock, metal, prog. Show me what YOU got!

I've been re-watching Justified to get ready for the new series/season starting this month. I really hope we see some Deadwood actors appear again like we did before. A lot of people make fun of Olyphant's acting, but I really enjoy it. He was kind of wooden in Deadwood, but I think it is played to pretty great effect. I love seeing him stride down the thoroughfare like a randy maniac bishop.

I recently rewatched this newer adaptation of the Prisoner and while it was mostly not great, I really did think McKellen has what it takes to be a great #2.

I am working on writing up some quality help/instructions for Lemmy instance admins. This is targeted toward those that are newer to Lemmy and Docker, but even those that know a thing or two might learn something from me. I have been a sysadmin for over 20 years, so I know some things.

I thought I'd share the first complete page I have written. I'd love some feedback if you have any to share.

Be seeing you.

P.S. I frequent the Lemmy Admin matrix chat and I moderate the Install Support channel. Stop by if you have questions! https://matrix.to/#/#lemmy-support-new-instance:discuss.online

I'm sure I'm not the first to think about this, but I haven't seen it mentioned yet. I believe there is another problem with open registration instances besides just the threat of spamming.

If you go through the process of making a new post in ANY community and you attach an image and then cancel the post the image is STILL on the server at the given URL and is publically viewable if someone has that URL.

Theoretically, someone could upload illegal images this way and hotlink to them from another site. Because there are no posts on the instance with the bad image attached an instance admin would have no way of knowing the images were there unless they make a habit of browsing the pict-rs datastore regularly. There's currently no easy way to moderate or delete images in the pict-rs datastore.

I don't think I need to elaborate more on what kinds of images could be lurking on your very own server which could be hotlinked into VERY dark places on the web. Saying that you "didnt know" that they were there is not a defense. When the authorities are knocking on your door because you are hosting illegal images you will be sorry that you didn't take a more active role in your user base.

I realize that even if you close or set manual registration that there's still the danger of a bad user doing this very thing, but I think putting in some minor hurdles would greatly decrease the chances.

Regardless, I think there needs to be a better way to manage the pict-rs part of Lemmy and an easy way for admins and instance owners to be able to view EVERY attachment on their server to make sure there's nothing there that could get them in trouble.

I run a small instance that just have people I personally know on it, so it's not a worry for me. But the larger instances that are opening signups to strangers should be aware and take precautions.

I really try not to get over hyped on this news. I think Flanagan is the best steward for the Dark Tower adaptation. I really hope this comes to fruition.

If you're a fan, this probably isn't news to you. But I thought I'd share it anyway.

I am really excited for this, and I hope it succeeds where others have failed.
