The funniest complaint posts are the people who complain about complaints. :)

Everyone understands how much work goes into developing apps. That doesn't mean we need to roll over and take it when we see predatory pricing models.

There are ways to charge for updates without forcing a subscription.

Plus Apple has the wealth and resources of entire countries.

Yes, if I get an Apple product that has a minor blemish, or when Apple screws up, I expect better from them. Because they are the most powerful tech company on Earth.

Yeah seriously. OpenAI has been one of the most successful companies on Earth in the last year, the fact that they've had so much turmoil is bizarre!

I personally believe every scrap of data should be encrypted. Doesn't matter if it's NSFW or an archive of the weather report. Everyone should be encrypting their hard drives so they're easier to securely erase when you need to decommission them. Aside from forgetting the password, there's virtually no downside to you at all.

Veracrypt, FileVault (or APFS encrypted storage) and BitLocker, are all perfectly solid encryption options. I'm not up on my Linux options.

To back up to the cloud, use a tool that allows you to manage the encryption locally, like Rclone, Duplicacy or Arq Backup. Never upload anything unencrypted to the cloud and never keep any unencrypted hard drives around.

This has been my strategy. Keep my encrypted data at home and upload it in encrypted form to the cloud.

Uh. It's an interface for using an API. Multiple APIs as a matter of fact.

I mean if you want to make all the API calls yourself using specially crafted URLs, save the output yourself, and take care of everything without a GUI then you go right ahead.

Most online services are accessed using an API and some sort of GUI. I can't think of many people who would call the GUI "just a wrapper". I suppose a GUI technically is a wrapper, but the point is you don't have to remember or make the API calls yourself.

The only alternative is ChatGPT Plus which doesn't include all the APIs and is a flat fee. This is a client for MacOS that has been steadily improved upon since its initial release, that gives you easy and convenient access to many different APIs.

The developer also makes precisely $0 from this app, it's something they made for their personal use and then figured they would post and maintain it, for free, in case you also find it useful.

Personally, this is my primary AI client now.

Sadly I'm planning to switch back to PC for my next purchase because while I adore MacOS, I find the expense, limitations and planned obsolescence of the hardware to be really detestable. I have a MacBook Pro now which would be fully capable of running Sonoma, but Apple blocks it from doing so. It doesn't even get security updates anymore, so now I guess I should just... throw it away? It's insane.

The shenanigans about overpriced RAM and their ridiculous claim that Macs need less RAM than PCs, what a ridiculous pile of BS.
