Didn't we also just break 3% last year, or am I mistaken? Either way, awesome news for the FOSS community.
I'm barely in my 20s and I don't even know what a slide deck is lol.
They definitely had a... certain audience in mind with this teaser lmao
I can acknowledge all that and still say fuck discord. I never mentioned herding everyone over, I just explained why I think it's a parasite and why I have a strong disliking towards it.
Idk about them, but it's a centralized, locked-down service that absorbs and holds information and data hostage like tomorrow.
As someone who's trying to completely avoid Discord, it's quite frustrating how many communities and projects will put important information in their Discords, and nowhere else. You have to have an account to see it, and it also isn't searchable in a search engine. It is actually quite terrible for pretty much everyone.
Element/Matrix lets you peek into public chats and servers/spaces without an account, so it can definitely be done. They won't do it though, because they gotta make you feel dat FOMO lol.
Kobo devices are the way to go. Easy sideloading, multiple FOSS operating system alternatives, and generally they've got some nice n' cheap options.
AntennaPod and Podverse are both really good.
Yeah, there's a crazy amount of tricks they employed to bring the sprites to life in a way that just isn't possible on modern displays. The sharp pixel look is actually an unfortunate byproduct of the transition to newer tech.
Regardless of the how, I think it's really cool that the top instance isn't run by the devs. Really shows off the power and appeal of decentralized services.
To my knowledge, the dev actively does not want .ml to be the main instance, and because of that a lot of people ended up (and still are) joining .world or beehaw. I fully expect .world to become the default at some point, it statistically has more active users and is outgrowing .ml at a rapid pace.
A fair warning, it might be best to try and archive the content and transfer it over to Lemmg instead of leaving the subreddit itself up. Reddit seems to be forcibly reopening communities to stop the blackout, so if one doesn't act soon enough they might be forced out of their own subreddit and lose control.
I don't even think much when running games anymore. Even DRM-free games I get from Gog I can just click on and run with Wine most of the time. It's so awesome.
