From what I understand, "whispers" were what private messages were called on twitch. And it's "then existing," I don't use twitch, but I guess it doesn't exist anymore, that's what they mean. Pretty poor wording though, don't blame you for not knowing what the hell they mean.
The trending page is horrible on mastodon. I wish they'd implement some better discovery features, but the devs seem to think that a better user experience would mean they're just as bad as twitter or something. I'm so rarely tempted to use it.

My anecdotal experience is the complete opposite of you two lol. Tons of issues with micro-b and a few broken connectors. No issues thus far with C.
