I have to mention that I've downloaded the app from the website - premium costs more if you download the app from the store. In Italy, the pricing is 3.66 €/month if you pay monthly, or 2.24 €/month if you pay annually

I've been subscribed to premium for some time now. The things it would be difficult to give up are:

  • voice messages transcription
  • 4 gb files upload
  • real-time translations
  • ability to react to messages using custom emojis
  • ability to react with up to 3 emojis to a message
  • maybe, being able to create more than 10 folders

These features might seem some niche features you use once in a while, but I actually use them very very often

Premium is 2 €/month in my country, and considering how much I use Telegram (all my contacts and circles use it) and the features I mentioned above, I think it's worth it

So it begins

Camera: GrapheneOS's camera app. Have been my camera of choice ever since I've discovered it. Never had an issue, offers all the basic features you would expect from a camera

Meta: just making sure that anyone that reads this comment is aware of the existence of Obtainium!

Obtainium allows you to install and update Apps directly from their releases pages, and receive notifications when new releases are made available.

Yes, that was fast, but this is partly because of the introduction of channel giveaways a few months ago: channel owners can gift premium subscriptions to their subscribers, which will be randomly selected by Telegram (you don't need to opt-in). The channel will then be awarded the giveaway winners' boosts, that will let it unlock some additional features

That means that after some months, the giveaways winners will have to decide whether to renew their premium subscription or not (which was gifted to them: they might not be as interested in Telegram's premium features as paid users that decided to subscribe on their own). The current number of subscribers might be a spike caused by the novelty of giveaways. It's unlikely that the trend of gifting premium subscriptions will continue to generate this much revenue, but we will see. For sure this is a very convenient moment to decide to release some numbers on premium subscriptions ;)

Tried to open that webpage but godaddy asks me if I want to buy the domain. Typo?

[email protected] is here to cater to vegans, not people who are curious about vegans and want to interrogate them about things that they could much more easily discover from the first paragraph of a Wikipedia article

Originally, this was this community's intent too. The rules in the sidebar are willingly shallow about this kind of posts because at some point we decided not to be too strict with submissions, considering that there wasn't that much activity and the mods were mostly afk . So posts like this are tolerated unless they become an omnis cicrclejerk/backpatting fest

yes, https://www.telegram.org/apps lists both, but if you open web.telegram.org, you will be automatically redirected to one of the two apps without being given the choice. The differences are not listed because the two apps are supposed to offer more or less the same features, and anyway nobody's keeping track of them. As far as I know, also, the two developers are given great freedom in deciding which secondary features to implement (these webapps are not yet mature to actually replace the desktop client) so this makes keeping track of the differences a little more difficult.

You are basically not supposed to chose, choice is for those who are actively following the development of the two apps, apparently 🤷

If you want to get an idea of which client to pick, have a look at their telegram channels, they publish nice changelogs:

(also notice at the differences in the username and title format lol)

Yes, they are two different apps actively developed by two different people (A source code, K source code). They are the two winners of a contest Telegram held a few years ago, but they haven't' decided which one will be the default/standard webapp yet, so you can use both. I think web.telegram.org still picks a random one for you the first time you access it

I assume that by "channel" you mean "group"

On any platform, you can use the lens icon to search for messages. Once you tap/click on it, an user silhouette 👤 icon will appear. It allows to filter messages from a specific user, yourself included

If by "channel" you mean "channel", then there's no way to know which of the posts in the channel were sent by yourself, since they all appear as they were sent by the channel

If you want to see a list of all messages you've sent across all chats, then there's no way to do that unless you script something using the users API

At the time I knew what the fediverse was and I was using Mastodon quite consistently, and I was waiting for a federated alternative to reddit. Raddle at the time was already a thing, but federation was not on their roadmap.

As per how I found it... here's a comment from four years ago :)

Durov introduces Telegram's take on ads in his Russian channel.

The translated channel post (translated with DeepL):

Soon, official advertising messages will appear in Telegram channels for the first time. Most users will hardly notice this change - for three reasons:

  1. Telegram will not show advertising messages in chat lists, private conversations, or groups. The ads will only affect large channels - services where there are already ads and whose support results in the largest expenditures on the part of Telegram.

  2. No personal information will be used to show ads. User privacy is paramount to Telegram. The content of advertising messages will depend only on the topics of the channels in which they are displayed, and not on users' personal data.

  3. Official Telegram advertising messages will be unobtrusive. Only short texts without external links or photos will be allowed in them. An advertisement may appear only after all new messages in the channel have been viewed.

Ads posted by Telegram channel owners themselves in the form of regular messages are now found in Telegram channels. The official advertising messages that Telegram is introducing will be much more comfortable for users. The income from such advertisements will allow Telegram to continue providing users with a free and unlimited service.

Documentation:

As far as I know, official apps still don't support sponsored messages, but they're probably going to support them in the next version, which should be released in a couple of weeks.

This thing has not been publicized by Telegram itself yet - it has been announced just on Durov's russian personal channel

bye

Judging from a recent thread, many people would like Lemmy communities not to adopt a naming that includes the "porn" suffix, which is something that (I guess) originated on reddit but we don't necessarily need to adopt here as well.

This community didn't took off yet so I can easily turn it into a proxy community redirecting to the new one that will be created.

Someone already suggested "AbandonedAwe" as a name, which I believe is a good candidate. If someone has other names to suggest, feel free to post them here. I would like to keep the "Abandoned" prefix btw

I claimed [email protected] just to be sure
