Can you give a screenshot of the error on possumpat.io? That sounds like something that neeeds investigation

Yeah, comparing the comment chains between us and lemmy.ca, it seems like everything is okay:

Federation weirdness from the large instances is probably going to happen for a while - I believe there are some changes coming soon in 18.1 that will hopefully smooth some of that out.

That aspect of ffxiv is one of my favorite things about it - there's almost no fomo / season pass shenanigans (outside of pvp). I've been playing since the 2.X days and the way everything is designed around playing at your own pace has really made it easy to enjoy over the years.

I hope they never stop producing these, I need a full shelf of xiv lore.

Great suggestions! I'll use these, and the post by @[email protected] as nobody else has suggested anything 😅

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Added some! I need to make a proper import script to batch all of these.

blob cat with pride flag colors blob cat with bisexual flag colors blob cat with ace flag colors blob cat with trans flag colors

They show up kinda huge right now but I think that's a lemmy ui problem.

Thanks for the reply. I've been side-eyeing instances that have open community creation due to how easy it is for bad actors to come and start shit, especially if instance admins aren't constantly on top of things.

As other people in this thread have pointed out, if you allow Nazis to hang out in your bar for long enough, you become a Nazi bar. Given your instance's stated rules against bigotry, I would advocate for proactive action in cases like this. Donald Trump is a champion of racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, and xenophobia - all the things you don't allow. I wouldn't think you'd want a community that champions him as a dogwhistle for all of those things.

Have you considered disabling open community creation and having it be a function of your Agora discussion space?

Lots of performance and UI improvements! As always let me know if anything seems missing or broken.

Hope you enjoy! There's nothing else quite like it imo. I'd love for a reboot/sequel/spiritual successor someday.

Armored core is also among my favorites, the AC design language is so effortlessly iconic.

I've also got a soft spot for fantasy styled mechs like the Guymelefs from The Vision of Escaflowne

Oh, nice catch on the connections there! I've always found it fascinating how often anime and other Japanese media take inspiration from Gnosticism and other weird aspects of Judeo-Christian myth. The Xeno RPGs (Gears/Saga/Blade) are some of my favorites because how much they also play around with these old ideas in a modern way.

As requested in the meta thread, here's a space for discussing tea and tea related things. I'm not a big tea person, so I'd love some suggestions for an icon/banner/sidebar description. Let me know in the comments!

Site loading slow?

Can't find a community?

Questions about Lemmy/Fediverse?

Friend's registration application lost in the mail?

Post any and all questions about the instance here, and I'll see what I can do to help.

Does anyone have some gunpla they've put together recently, or that they're working on?

Here's an old RS-178 MKII PG kit I assembled recently. Still deciding how I want to detail him, but as my first PG the level of detail and articulation is really cool.

Hey everyone! Preston here. As The Possum Patio has already started growing a surprising amount since I set it up last week, I wanted to put some thoughts down on what the instance is right now, where it might be going, and some other general background info.

Background

Like many of you, I am (was?) a longtime user of Reddit - going on 13 years for me. The site was always an excellent time-waster and source of entertainment, but a couple years in I realized what really made reddit special to me were the niche communities. With old school forums generally going defunct over the past 20 years, Reddit was The Place to find discussions on that one weird niche JRPG nobody'd ever heard of, or find a fandom of some show that finished airing years ago. All those niches were what Reddit was to me, and as the site continues down the path of enshittification it'll be sad to see those niche spaces slowly decay over the coming years.

So! Reddit drama aside, the ethos of having niche communities is what I want to focus on for this Lemmy instance. The larger instances have the big umbrella topics already covered - I'm not interested in hosting (or moderating) a politics or general gaming community. I want to curate spaces that get into weird niche topics that I (and maybe you!) care about, spaces that seem to be missing from the larger Fediverse as of right now.

Communities

Right now, The Possum Patio hosts 8 communites:

Currently, new community creation is disabled. Moderating and maintaining communities requires effort and time commitment from volunteers, and for now the only mods are myself and @brycethemilkman.

For now, I'm going to limit the total number of communities we host to around 10 or so. If we continue to grow I'd certainly consider expanding that number.

One last thought on communities - as the general Lemmy/Kbin userbase grows over the next few months, some of our communities might get pretty huge, some might not see much traffic or another "default" community for that topic may crop up elsewhere. Both of those things are good! I don't want to assert sole ownership over these spaces, I'll be happy whatever with whatever instance they find as a home.

Closing/Questions

Thanks for reading my rambling if you made it this far! I'm excited and honestly a bit nervous about the positive reception the instance has gotten - some of you were very flattering in your registration responses. 😊

If there's any questions or concerns you have, throw 'em down in the comments. As mentioned above, I'm open to creating about 2 more communities (maybe more if I really like the ideas) so feel free to suggest some.

-Preston
