Looks great!

Would you consider adding my Lemmy theme as well? https://github.com/pkrasicki/lemmy-modern-ui-theme-addon

You just need to follow this to use it on your instance: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/administration/theming.html. Then you can select the new theme in the admin panel.

RC4 is latest for backend. But Lemmy UI has RC7.

Please consider using my theme on this instance, so that everyone could enjoy a more more modern, efficient UI when browsing sh.itjust.works. It works with Lemmy 0.17, 0.18 and 0.18.1rc. It has a light theme variant, dark theme or both (auto).

Theme files for download: https://github.com/pkrasicki/lemmy-modern-ui-theme-addon/releases

It's also a Firefox addon: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/lemmy-modern-ui-theme

The only downside would be maintenance. Whenever a new version of Lemmy breaks the theme, someone will have to fix it. But I believe that together as a community we can easily maintain our own theme.

I made a Firefox addon that replaces the styles on Lemmy instances with something more modern. It works with Lemmy 0.17 and 0.18. It supports both light and dark theme.

I also released the CSS files - they can be used as a theme on a Lemmy instance. Tell your instance admin to give it a try: https://github.com/pkrasicki/lemmy-modern-ui-theme-addon/releases

Instructions unclear, I wrote a Firefox addon instead :D https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/lemmy-modern-ui-theme

But you should be able to take the script and easily turn it into a userscript: https://github.com/pkrasicki/lemmy-modern-ui-theme-addon

It works with both light and dark theme, but sometimes the detection fails for me and applies wrong styles. I hope those hacks will last for some time though so that we could have a modern UI. I would change more stuff, but some things are not possible.

That sounds interesting! I wanted to be able to use it myself in case devs weren't interested in changing the UI. Can you tell me how it works and how to do that?

Thanks! I'm a front-end developer :)

I created a proposal with UI design changes. Feel free to post a comment with your feedback: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/issues/1183

More things would need to be changed to make the app more readable, but I didn't want to propose too many changes at once. So this is just for the main page with default theme.

No. Mastodon has 9 million users and is doing fine. There are other federated projects like Matrix and PeerTube which also have more users than Lemmy. Unlike Reddit they don't belong to some monopoly that could take them offline.

Since people talk a lot about Invidious lately, I would like to share this great desktop app for those who don't know it yet. It uses Invidious and lets you watch YouTube without ads. It even has SponsorBlock (you might need to enable it in settings though). You can add videos to favourites and see the history - all stored locally. It's Free Software.

On desktop I recommend FreeTube app which uses Invidious https://freetubeapp.io

What you are looking for is the Free Software movement, not Open Source. You can watch a short introduction here: https://youtu.be/Ag1AKIl_2GM

You can then understand why it was created and why it's important to society. According to the values of Free Software, Apple is an unethical company, because it restricts users freedom and their right to control their own devices. Doing that lets them abuse users by for example taking away their privacy or adding unskippable updates that might slow down their system or do other harmful things.

Free Software fixes this by giving you the freedom to study the program, modify it and distribute it. Just like the scientific knowledge is available to everyone and anyone can improve upon it.

The front-end repository is actually: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui

Edit: I suggested some changes to the default theme. Here is the link if anyone wants to take a look: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/issues/1183
