What's the benefit of having a separate DNS host? I'm using porkbun and had to mess around with its dns records to configure my email hosting. Does having separate service mean I don't have to do this all over again If I switched registrars?

Adding to this, uploading audio/video instead of text means a lot more info and metadata for future adversaries to chew on and discover what you might be hiding. There are instances of people being traced to their country/city based on tiny details like the electrical outlets on the wall, geographical features and noises from nearby electronics like national news broadcasts.

I would love to have domain agnostic URL for lemmy posts. It's not easy to copy and paste from mobile and having multiple redundant URLs like instance.tld/post/12345 and another.tld/post/98765 leads to a discoverability problem.

Linux distros have gotten friendlier and with better HW and SW support but PC makers and already established ecosystem have also made customizing more difficult. This means end users are increasingly discouraged to do anything that is not "authorized", further driving away adoption of alternatives.
