Why on another continent? Except maybe VDI, some direct calls to some LLM or some insane scales, there's nothing really that needs those round trip times.

I would say it’s a very bad metric though in this context.

Full-ACK.

Luckily "the West" isn't just the U.S. - it's also France, the U.K., Mexico and even Australia...

the storage is built so it doesn’t break so easily. I trust AWS engineers more than Mike, no matter how cool Mike is to hang out with. Additionally, if the storage breaks while Mike is on vacation we’re screwed, with the cloud you get a whole team 24/7 on it.

That's easily mitigated just following established standards. Redundancy is cheaper than anything else in the aftermath and documentation can be done easy with automation.

you can prevent data loss with backups or multi-region setups with a few clicks/terraform lines. Try telling the PO that you need to rent datacenter space in Helsinki and Singapore for redundancy…

You don't, you rent rack space in a location far enough away but close enough to get the data in a few hours.

It's neither superior, easier or less risky, it's just a shift in responsibility. And in most cases, it's so expensive that a second or third on site engineer is payed for.

The west does not have a monopoly on innovation.

Nope - but it does look like we have the "monopoly" of being able to call out bullshit openly and not fear falling out of a window. Or being stabbed.

I disagree - the Working Class want's a mix between the original SPD and the original FDP. Those that want more right for the workers and those that are self employed. Because everyone thinking straight knows, we need immigration. However, we need a new set of rules. The AfD pretty much does play the role of "Bauernfänger" (the literal translation of "Scam" doesn't work), as we say. All of those AfD Politicians that have actual seats have done shit over the years.

I do too. If anyone can't follow those basic rules, they have no place in our society.

As a Metalhead, that's a VERY different gesture 🤘

Would be exceptionally easy for the U.S., the renewable power potential is enormous and making E-Fuels or E-Crude is pretty damn easy. It's not very efficient, but 0 Co2 is 0 Co2.

But the best part is, it's actually economically viable. Many parts around the world agreed to a Co2 Tax, making Fossile Fuels increasingly expensive - synthetic fuels, gasses, paraffines all would be exempt. And all those that want to drive 1000 Miles on one tank, do a cannonball run or tow a few tons can still do in whatever way they want...just without Co2. Hell, even the coal rollers can do just that...

Overall however, saving democracy and the constitution should be top priority...

It's not just a moral duty, it's a damn duty for your country. Those idiots shouting "We are the true patriots" have lost everything both our countries stood for since we lost the war and you won it. The respect for people, the respect for different cultures, the knowledge that many of the laws our societes stand on are written in blood - hell, the respect to disagree and the ability do have different opinions.

I wish you luck, but that simply isn't possible with some, they are too far gone.

I have no issue if political views don't line up, in fact I welcome discussions and I have been wrong many times on some topics. However, the line has to be drawn somewhere, and that somewhere is openly advocating for racism or other views, that simply cannot stand in a society that aligns with modern "western" views. (Too many individual points that we take for granted these days)
