The timer habit comes from me forgetting about my tea about 50% of the times and ending up with an undrinkable cup.

As for weighting tea leaves... there's been a period when I felt particularly experimental and I was juggling some 8 different kinds of tea; I quickly got sick of remembering how many spoons of each kind I should use for my 300ml cup (density varies a lot depending on how much the leaves are rolled and how big they are) so I bought a 10€ "precision" scale and got into the habit of weighting my tea leaves.

Nowadays I generally have just two kinds of tea around (plus sometimes a third one I'm trying out), so it's not like the scale is really needed... I do appreciate the consistency however (I get tea in rather big bags, and the leaves on the top are noticeably bigger than the ones towards the end of the bag), plus having one less thing to remember is always nice.

I use around 1.5g tea per 100ml and make three infusions with Darjeeling (well, with most black teas really): 2mins, 3mins and "a very long time" (IDK if the third should be even considered tea... I leave it be and then drink the resulting beverage at room temp)

With the people I've talked about privacy the issue seems to be that they perceive google/apple/whoever as somewhat abstract entities: when I try asking if they would allow their local supermarket/corner shop (let alone the government!) to know that much about them, they immediately reply "no way!"... but then (even after the conversation) they are still ok with google tracking their location 24x7.

Come tutte le metafore, però, il paragone regge solo fino a un certo punto. Allora provo a uscir di metafora :)

Il nocciolo del problema prescinde dalla contingenza del costo delle API ed è che Reddit e i redditor hanno interessi in conflitto: Reddit vuole estrarre più valore possibile dai suoi utenti (vendendoli come target pubblicitario, ma anche sfruttando il lavoro dei mod e le conoscenze/idee di tutti quelli che postano), mentre i redditor vogliono parlare degli argomenti che hanno a cuore con meno sbattimenti possibili.

Anche nel caso in cui Reddit dovesse fare marcia indietro sulle API (cosa difficilmente immaginabile visto che s'è smesso di stampare soldi gratis e che gli introiti da pubblicità sono in ribasso), questo conflitto di interessi non sarà risolto e, inevitabilmente, si ripresenterà prima o poi in altra forma.

L'idea che sia appropriato protestare invece che prendere le proprie cose e andarsene è basata sul malinteso che gli utenti abbiano diritto di veto su quel che reddit fa coi loro contenuti e/o che esista un qualche "contratto sociale" per cui i siti che danno in crowdsourcing la creazione di contenuti dovrebbero permettere al pubblico indistinto di accedervi senza limitazioni e costi.

In realtà non c'è nessun obbligo del genere: quando posti qualcosa su reddit (o facebook/twitter/...) stai "regalando" alla piattaforma il tuo contenuto senza imporre loro alcun obbligo su come esso debba essere fruibile.

La scarsa attenzione (per non dire wishful thinking) degli utenti su questo punto non è diversa da quanto succede riguardo la privacy — ad esempio quando, dopo aver riempito casa di microfoni collegati ad amazon, ci si stupisce che qualcuno di amazon possa ascoltare le proprie conversazioni — o i servizi "smart" che le varie aziende tentano di propinarci (ad esempio le stampanti hp con inchiostro in abbonamento che smettono di funzionare quando si stacca l'abbonamento).
