It shouldn't as long as you make sure that the numeric uid/gid of your user account matches the one from the original system. If that's not feasible then you can chown the tree.

I thought that slock was too complicated so I wrote a tiny one for myself in Go using xgb. Less than 100 lines and pretty straightforward but it makes some assumption about my personal setup so not public.

Not worried at all, I've moved on many years ago.

You might want to skip forward about 40 more years to be on the safe side.

I will have to update my bookmarks but the new URL scheme looks much nicer! I like the UI changes too. Can't wait to see this on my instance.

I don't have a group for it but I like the theme. Give these people air Cohaagen!

Thanks for the review! Deus and Troyes by the same designer are some of my favoites but I slept on this one. I hope it gets a new print someday.

As usual, it depends:

Splendor pros:

  • Plays 2-4 (vs strictly 2 for Duel)
  • Simpler rules, easier to teach
  • Larger chips, better tactility
  • Expansion available

Splendor Duel pros:

  • Rules and components optimized for 2p
  • Nicer card art (subjective)
  • More decisions, more interesting draft, multiple win conditions
  • Much smaller box, reasonably sized for the game (unlike the original)

If you plan on playing with more than 2 then original Splendor is the obvious choice. It's still a decent choice even if you will only ever play at 2 but value the simplicity and purity of the original design.

Duel is a more interesting game thanks to the new draft and multiple win conditions. "More" and "more interesting" is not automatically better under all circumstances though.

Personally I am keeping both even though we almost always play at 2. We play Duel more but sometimes I just want to play regular Splendor and Duel is not a 1-1 replacement.

The Duel box conveniently fits inside the original's box (insert tossed). I am no longer planning to get the Cities of Splendor expansion thoguh, Duel is filling the "Splendor with more stuff" space nicely.

For 7 Wonders it's more clear cut, Duel is a much better option for 2p.

For Agricola the two games are almost too different to compare. All Creatures (big box) is great in its own way but doesn't feel like a replacement for the original.

Very useful!
I was gonna ask if it might be possible to include the table inline in the post but it looks like Lemmy doesn't support markdown tables yet.

Thiefdom looks neat, more The Mico art is always nice.

Baby Splendor is great, Bruno Cathala doing what he does best!

We tried the 2-player variant of Cat in the Box. It works fine but it left me feeling that a better 2p variant should be possible. Seems too easy to tie the tricks and avoid paradoxes. Might be our lack of experience with the game, maybe it's different with a more aggressive playstyle? I have some ideas for tweaking it but I want to play it more first to better understand the game.

Would love to hear other experiences, especially about the 2p variant.

Also learned Challengers, online only on BGA so far but thinking about picking it up. Love it when a game doubles down on a core idea and makes it work. In this case it's focusing entirely on the deckbuilding portion of deckbuilders with with the round playing out mostly automatically, sort of like in auto-battler video games. It also reminded me of some other games I like: Tea for 2 and Baseball Highlights: 2045.

That video is more about managing the a large deck by splitting it and doing it to casino standards, meant it more as an interesting tidbit than a tutorial.

This 2 minute video explains the shuffle itself in detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvLE_MCNOe4

I've just spent a few minutes building the project and getting it to run, I thought I'd mention some tidbits:

  1. The instance URL should not include a trailing /. Example invocation that worked for me: RUST_LOG=info ./target/release/tafkars-lemmy https://myinstance
  2. Once running I was able to access the API using curl -v http://localhost:8000/top.json or curl -v http://localhost:8000/r/mycommunity/top.json

It's been a long day, setting up Nemo's War or Mage Knight feels like way too much hassle. What do you reach for?

Some of my picks:

  • For Northwood was a really pleasant surprise. I love tricktaking and it's amazing how well this game make that work for solo. The hand-evaluation part before each "conversation" is a really cool mechanic too.
  • Orchard is so easy to get on the table. And you get two plays for a single shuffle. I like the laser-focus on the single goal, great when my mind is not up for something more complicated
  • After the Virus is a cool little solo deckbuilder. Only getting started with this one but really enjoying it so far
  • Buttonshy stuff is always good. Rove, Ragemore, Food Chain Island, Skulls of Sedlec, Spaceshipped are some of my favorites. Oh and Sprawlopolis of course.
