Edit: i apologize for the gargantuan amount of text in my reply.

tlwr: Good choice for beginners. It attempts to ease certain aspects like installing software. Issues include outdated stuff due to being lts and duplicate apps on the store

+++++++++++

It was my first distro, back when v16.0 had just been released in 2021. Its a good distro. It has very good ideas which are helpful for beginners, id say.

The main aspect id recommend it for linux beginners is that if you try to download certain software from the web, a pop up will appear that says "hey, you can actually download this app on the software center". I found this super useful in order to break the habit of searching the web for all the exes i need.

(Fun story: One time i needed Zoom, so i went to its website and i didnt know if I had to pick the deb, rpm or tar.gz . Once i clicked on the deb, that pop up showed up, telling me Zoom was in the software center all along haha.)

When you download an exe with no equivalent on the app store and run it, it will ask you if you want to turn on "Windows App Support". Its just a fancy term for installing Wine, but its very helpful for a new user, as normally youd need the terminal to install it.

Another core aspect of Zorin is that you can install apps from the snapstore, flathub, ubuntu's repos, zorin's own repos, and the afromentioned windows app support, from the get go. I chose zorin for this reason: flatpaks vs snaps was a very prominent discussion back then, so a distro that implemented both by default let me form my own take.

(A huge minus from this comes with duplicate apps. My example: I needed Audacity, searching for it gave me three results. The flatpak, the snap and the ubuntu repo variant. That perplexed me for a few minutes and I was confused when i ended up installing two of them by accident.)

I think those are the main aspects of zorin. It uses a heavily customized version of Gnome 3.38 (latest release of gnome at the time). It has a lot of extensions to bring a Windows-like experience (Dash to Panel, KDEConnect, Desktop icons NG+, etc). The shell theme is honestly gorgeous and it has accent colours with dark mode too.

There is a "Lite" version of zorin that uses xfce instead. Its theme is nearly identical to the one they used in Gnome. There is also a "Pro" version that costs 40 dollars. Thats mainly to support the project, as it only grants you more preinstalled apps and the ability to switch to a MacOS or Unity style of desktop (aka different gnome extensions to replicate those DEs e.g. "dash to dock")

Since its yet another ubuntu lts based distro, its packages will tend to be outdated. v16.2 came out recently i think, which updated its packages to 22.10 so it wont be as noticeable as it could be. Nonetheless, it still has outdated features in some regards. (It still uses Gnome 3 as DE, no Wayland support, etc.)

In short. Its a good distro. It eased my transition from windows with those popups that encourage usage of the app center. They also made installed wine as easy as it gets. Having flatpaks and snaps allow the user to get the latest software updates with an lts stability. It also looks fantastic theme wise. The only thing i could note as issues are the duplicate apps on the app center and the outdated aspects many lts distros have. If those dont bother you, give it a go. Perhaps itll make you feel right at home.

I know Boost is going to become a Lemmy app. You can even "preorder" it on the playstore and itll download on your device as soon as its released.

The board shrinks to a 5x5 square. Everyone gets scrambled

Me, rn. I have 4 hours to make an essay about migration in Latin America and its biggest challenges. It was supposed to be done throughout the entire semester.

Dark tiles are now lava and pieces on those tiles will either move to a safe spot or burn to crisp

Would ask this on a LinuxCrackSupport community. Without it, the best choice is here, as i didnt buy the game on steam.

TGAA uses wmv cutscenes during the first half of the game. They cant play properly, getting stuck on a black screen. While it could be circumvented by removing the wmv files, skipping the cutscenes altogether is detrimental to the story, as this game is sort of a mystery-focused vn. Cutscenes are important.

The wmv files can be played with mf-installcab, according to this reddit post. The issue im having is that most online help refers to either steam, lutris or a raw ~/.wine folder. I use Bottles to run windows software, so if its possible to keep using that instead of Lutris, itd be appreciated.

-I tried this command line from a "Kingdom Hearts on Linux" tutorial to run mf-installcab on the bottle and it seemed to properly run and install the necessary dependencies. However, the cutscenes still do not work.

-I tried re-encoding the cutscenes as suggested here, but that did not work either, nor i expected it to.

-Using the Bottles options, I installed the Media Foundation dependency. That did not work either.

My situation is highly specific, even for a linux user, so i dont expect nor demand a solution. Apparently lutris works just fine from what i can read, so i might try that if nothing else works. Still, any help, no matter how small, will be appreciated.

Goddamn i needed to read that. Very infuriating to read the quotes saying "Youre going against the point of federation guys. Were supposed to be open for big corporations to harvest our data". Glad to know someone refutes those claims and explains why we are wary of meta

Github shows the same: Last commit 5 months ago. Funnily enough, the main dev's last comment was "Nobody quit anything" right after never showing up again.

Uazo, a collaborator of the project, seems to try to bring the project back alive. Even the /e/ Foundation is looking to support his work in order to keep bromite going.

For the future: if possible, consider the bus factor when choosing software:

What happens if <Developer> gets hit by a bus?

Do you happen to know if this is a Lemmy issue or a Lemmy.ml issue?

My grief with articles like this is that their "X is not there yet" statement rarely comes off as "It has rough edges but its improving", but always as "This product is flawed. Dont even bother".

And itd be fine if it's just someone's opinion, but here it's someone's opinion in a news article. The effect is that someone unaware of the fediverse will read that, assume that opinion is fact and never try the platform. Not only that, they'll also start stating the same opinion to others as if they experienced it first-hand..

Articles should bridge the gap of knowledge! Stop dissuading people from trying new stuff and encourage them to give it a go!

Sure, promoting lemmy as a drop-in replacement of reddit is downright dishonest. But it never hurts to create an account and see what the fuss is about. The article should work as a heads up to avoid headaches, not the website altogether.

Who knows, maybe it will be a perfect replacement for you, despite everything. I know it was for me.

From what i can gather, it could be beneficial to, for example, have an instance which would become the main place to get videogame content on Lemmy. Most communities would be for specific games or AAA companies, but it could also have c/general for asking questions or topics which are non specific to any community, or c/meta, which would work as a place to discuss the state of the instance.

Overall, nothing that different from the actual status quo, but this way, we could consider instances as hubs for certain topics, which would then specialize with the /c/s within said instance. Instead of having 7 c/technology across instances, we could have @Tech.no and subdivide it into c/topic1, c/topic2, etc. (was supposed to come up with smthing but came empty handed shut up i dont browse that sub) .

What im mostly seeing here is that popular instances themselves are not different from reddit. The most popular instances on lemmy are beehaw.org and lemmy.ml, which have the same m.o, if you will, of reddit. Which is good, theyre popular for a reason, but in a way, theyre competing with each other. Not financially, but there will be overlap between certain /c/s.

Of course im not asking if its possible. Its just a matter of running the server and having the right infrastructure. My question is if you think its feasible to decentralize lemmy from the main instances, or even a good idea in the first place. Maybe you think its ok the way things currently are? Or maybe what i said is supposed to be the goal and im just late to the party? What are your thoughts?

Usually I just upload stuff to social media without thinking about it twice. Here, though, devs require user donations to keep the servers running.

So im wondering, if I intend to post a videogame clip, is it recommended to upload it elsewhere and then link it here? Or am i overthinking this and I should just upload my clutches?

Edit: Looking at Lemmy's Documentation, Not only they recommend Peertube, but also PixelFed for uploading larger images and videos.
