I do hope he lands a seat somewhere. And hopefully somewhere better than Alpine.

Great question!! Ok a rough estimate is the best I can do. As everything is bigger in Texas, I will take a relatively big deer for reference. As you will understand, I must compare area with area, so here goes:

Taking a BigMac as a reference and assuming a patty diameter of 10.4cm Source. This would lead to an area of 84.95cm2.

A bigger deer skin could be 150x139 cm Source. On the one hand this is an overestimation because those are the maximum measures and it’s not perfectly square, but on the other hand we’re not taking certain area’s such as the hooves and head into account. The area comes to 20850cm2.

So one deer is, in terms of area, as big as 245,4 hamburgers.

Again, I hope this helps.

According to google, a deer has a height between 0.85 to 1.5 metres. According to the Texas Almanac, the Lone Star State extends 801 straight-line miles (from north to south). This equates to 1289084,54 metres.

Taking this into account, a deer is between 0,00000066 and 0,0000012 Texas.

I hope this helps.

Damn that is a great place to camp. Second breakfast is always a good plan, but what about elevensies?

If the cold becomes bothersome you could consider staying on the southern coast. Girona is still one of my favourite cities in the world and the weather in the region is usually very mild.

But do prepere for some cold in the montanas vacias. Some of the refugios seem to have fireplaces though, that would be amazing!

Haha the problem was that it also wat a scrub for the carbon frame, not ideal. But it was still really awesome

I have the 2 euro fleece gloves from decathlon and combine them with the black diamond waterproof overmits, it works well for me (but they’re not the cheapest). My problem with thicker waterproof gloves is that when they do get totally wet (and they will), it takes ages to dry.

Good luck on shedding the weight in Alicante, keep the stories from the road coming :)

Wow these pictures are so awesome. I especially like the landscape just before the refugio!

Yes, AchtungDrempels is in business again! Amazing pictures, great stories.

The single trail photos are definitely good for building up some Lemmy street cred, looks great! Also, so great having Decathlon around. Even though I’m not always a fan of the quality, I was in Canada once and really missed having an affordable sports goods store around — I value them way more now.

Early rest day sounds like a great plan, and I think the steepness is real. Somehow Spain and Austria seem to have those, french side of the pyrenees as well I guess.

Goraffe desert looks incredible, funny to read that a place I would ecpect to be desolate is actually quite busy.

Really nice to have the abrigos around in the cold mountains, I figure you’re going to be thankful for them in Montanas Vacias as well, I heard it gets really cold at night up there, too.

Man, the cold hands whilst descending are a real problem. I remember not feeling the brake handles, having to look on my handlebars to see if my hands were still in good braking position before any corners. I now have some very light waterproof mittens that help a bit.

Haha also, if there is ONE thing to complain about in Spain, it’s the bizarrely erratic opening times. Ehat the hell, Spain?!

Hope you found some Lemmy users in Siles, great joke :D

I just posted this on the science fiction community lemmy.ml link to post, hadn’t found this community yet.

OK, so first off, as the title says, there will be spoilers in here. So if you’re planning on reading it and haven’t yet already, please stop.

I read the series as a teenager and absolutely love them. Recently, I have taken the time to reread all five of them, and have to say I was slightly disappointed. I still thought that the writing was very amusing, the social commentary was good and the lightly touched philosophical discussions were good as well. My main problem concerns character development, or better said, the complete lack thereof in my opinion. I found that most disturbing into different aspects:

The lack of real, meaningful friendship between characters As an example, Arthur and Ford are supposed to be friends, but from the interaction in the book it seems more like they tolerate each other and don’t really appreciate each other’s presence or influence on their adventures. Every time they get out of touch, they don’t appear to feel sorry about it, and when they see each other again, they are extremely British about it. This also applies to the other characters in my opinion.

** the complete abandonment of the relationship between Arthur and Fenchurch** So, in the first three books, Arthur is like this maladjusted guy, who really doesn’t know what his place in the universe is. This also applies to his personal relationships. Then, he meets a woman that is presented as his soulmate, someone that finally understands him and respects/likes him the way he is. All of a sudden, she disappears into thin air, and she’s only mentioned one more time in the book series. Arthur seems happy to just make sandwiches and doesn’t seem to mourn this loss too much after the initial search. To me, this makes the character rather shallow. I appreciate the author was not trying to write a novel about love in space, or whatever, but still, it feels a bit lacking to me.

I will end my rant here, I am very curious as to your opinions on this matter. Do you feel like I’m just expecting too much from these books or do you tend to agree with these criticisms?

Ok so not completely sure this is allowed here, but not against any rules on the sidebar so I’ll give it a go. @mods please remove or message me if not appropriate

I’m always looking for cool new routes (mainly focused on Europe), even if I won’t get to do them in the short-term. I came across this post on Tumblr and really liked the photos. I included one of them in the post. Then I googled it and there is a whole website dedicated to it, complete with an awesome PDF and a lot of GPX files. I want to add that I am in no way affiliated or reimbursed by them for this post. I highly encourage you to check it out!

By the way: it’s a lot of gravel, but they have an asphalt only variant on the site as well.

Maybe include altitude in both metres and feet, otherwise 80% of comments will be about that whole discussion.
