I have auto update turned off for apps, so I didn't get the last update for Infinity and I can still use it to see Reddit, for now. Once it dies I'm out though. I can't imagine they will be able to get enough subscriptions to support the app, so I'm not really sure what the goal is here.

The Infinity listing in the Play store links to this post that has a bit more info (warning: Reddit link) https://www.reddit.com/r/Infinity_For_Reddit/comments/147bhsg/the_future_of_infinity/

Even the people subbed to r/Infinity_For_Reddit are saying they won't buy a subscription. Wouldn't Infinity be racking up a huge bill from Reddit once the API change goes into effect? There's no way subscriptions will cover that so I don't understand why they're doing this.

Yeah, I noticed a lot of people on posts like this saying they were giving out all of the awards they've saved up over time before deleting their Reddit accounts. I don't think this is all brain dead people paying the company they're boycotting. They're using the awards they have left to bring attention to the protest. I had a bunch of awards to give out from when someone randomly gave me gold but I never gave Reddit any money.

What a perfect way to go. Incredible. Your account died with honor!

I agree with all of this. I definitely think at least some of them are astroturfing. The mods from r/adviceanimals got kicked and ever since then, they mostly post memes that say things like "the official app isn't so bad, you guys!" We all know u/spez isn't above editing comments for petty reasons and since he got caught, I'm sure he's more careful about not getting caught editing things to suit him now. I wonder if the voting system is rigged, too, at least in some subs.

I see that the trolls I was talking about are managing to find their way to Lemmy. They never have any actual insightful things to say, it's just reducing your arguments to the most simplified version and repeating them back in a childish condescending way. It's almost like...that's not all the protest is about? Not sure if these are just kids trying to be edgy, or if they're working for Reddit, or if they're just u/spez being petty. I try to be an empathetic person, but I have a really hard time understanding thinking it's fun to belittle people for caring about things. It's such a waste of energy. If you need attention, learn a skill and impress people with it, I assure you it's a much more fulfilling way to get people to notice you. I hope these people can get the emotional support they need someday.

The bootlicking on that post (in a PIRACY sub nonetheless) is wild. Lots of "you don't understand, Reddit is a COMPANY! 😭" I've peeked in on Reddit a bit and I've been seeing those kinds of "won't somebody think of the shaaaareholdersss and adminss" comments on a few posts related to the protest. Things like this insightful little nugget:

"Seems all the reddit hate is based solely on reddit doing something similar to twitter, and I'm supposed to be upset cause "Elon man bad"? Tons of APIs cost money to use... build your own platform that freely allows everyone to scrape all "your" content, lead by example please..."

I wonder how many of those are Reddit employees and bots? They can't all be u/spez alts, can they?

Oh and this is fun too, did you know that we're all liTeRaLlY extremists over here?

"Lemmy is very far-left. They are literally extremists, I'll not be part of that shit."

Guess Reddit is going to be taken over by alt-right trolls too.

Edit: Still figuring out how the formatting works over here.

Oh good, that explains it then. I'm so used to being suspicious that everyone is a bot lol

I'm new to Lemmy like most of us are, and so far that comment is the first one I've seen that feels like a malfunctioning bot. Can someone with more tech knowledge than me explain if we are going to have a bot problem on Lemmy like we did on Reddit?

These are so cute! I made a bulbasaur planter and put a little cactus in it. I am terrible with plants and can't get it to root though lol

And the puns. My god the puns.

I just wanted more info about what's going on in a video, and now I have to wade through hundreds of low effort puns. And most of them the exact same dumb joke repeated over and over.

Oof, I can see why some of those instances are blocked, though. Since I'm on Beehaw, I checked their block list and...wow. Scrolled through each one for a few minutes and now I'm hoping I'm not on some kind FBI list for it. A few highlights from my research expedition:

  • A meme featuring various characters (MLP, Vaporeon, Peter Griffin, etc) unironically mourning Ted Kaczynski
  • NSFL gore
  • People calling for the execution of cops who stopped rioters on Jan 6
  • SO. MUCH. LOLICON.
  • "Hahaha look at this WOKE LIB 🤣🤣🤣"
  • QANON. QANON EVERYWHERE.

I was only on each one for a minute or so. I don't think I'm missing out on anything except maybe being put on some kind of list.

I got Jerboa from the Play store so it's there now. Overall it's not bad, I like the UI but there seem to be a few bugs to work out. For example, I've noticed that if there are images in comments, the scroll starts stuttering, the screen flickers, and it's difficult to scroll past the image. Not a deal breaker but hopefully Lemmy will get popular enough to attract more devs. I think Jerboa is a good start though, I hope to see it improve.

Edit: With the last two updates, most of the problems I've seen have been fixed. So far the app seems pretty great, especially considering how new it is.
