I use a paper white to read books, pretty much exclusively. Oddly, I find it best to have both the backlight and an external book light, so I guess that says something about my eyesight.

There are two "search"s. The main search will ONLY search titles. It won't search tags and it won't search text within a notebook. The secondary search, from within a notebook, will search for text within that notebook. FWIW, you can browse tags in the Tags menu. I don't use tags (because I can't search for them), so I'm not sure how useful that is.

I'm grandfathered in to connect, so I don't pay anything. If I did have to pay, I would not.

Take a look at RCU. That's the best solution for backups and managing the content of your tablet.

BTW, Connect is NOT a backup.

So I'm saving $527 by not buying the Type Folio bundle, and I'm saving $497 by not buying the Book Folio bundle. Cool.

Or should I say offal. I had reason today to actually USE text. I was looking at a notebook on my phone with the app, and I thought of a todo item to add to it. So I typed it in.

Later, on the tablet, I tried moving that text up a little. No go. So I just wrote it where I wanted. Then I deleted the text. I thought, "Okay, I'll also remove all those blank lines that positioned the text close to where I wanted." When I did that, half of the handwriting rose up over the other half and clear off the page. Undo? No go.

To get the page back, I went to my other tablet--not connected to the wifi, copied the original notebook, connected and synced, then rewrote my todo item. Sheez.

Lesson to myself: NEVER mix text and handwriting. That's useful, right?

I think there are two different ideas here (but I may not be understanding):

  1. changing the config file so both tablets look like the same tablet to the cloud
  2. copying a notebook from one tablet to another one.

Regarding 1.

I did this: Two Tablets One Account, and I'm glad I did. But if you still have stuff scattered over two accounts, you'll want to make backups first. There are instructions in various places for ssh (command line) access, (e.g., reMarkable Guide, Information about reMarkable 2), but if that all still looks Greek, I hear you. Which leads to ...

Regarding 2.

RCU is a fabulous utility program. You buy it ($12), you install it, and you configure both your tablets in it. You can make backups by connecting RCU to the tablet, then Notebooks => Select all => Download, choose a folder and it saves your notebooks in a format that can be copied back to the tablet or to another tablet.

On the other tablet, you connect to RCU and Upload a saved file from the other tablet's backup folder. In my experience, there isn't another utility that allows you to do this as easy as RCU. It does a whole bunch else besides (e.g., custom templates and wallpaper), but backups and copying files have been my main uses of it--though I do use its virtual printer, i.e., I can print to the tablet.

In summary, you can do 1. if you really want both tablets to always contain the same stuff. Or you can do 2. for easy copying from one tablet the other. Either way, you should do 2. for easy backups.

Markers/Styluses Roundup

There used to be a Wiki page with stylus recommendations. I wonder if something similar might be added to the reMarkable Guide

Anyway, the following are examples that I can say work with the tablets (rM1/rM2). And by "work" I mean they write fine as Fineliner, which I use 99.99% of the time.

(I posted a different version of this that had links to each marker, but the spam filters blocked it. So I'm removing the links from here. Most are well known, but I'm happy to post the links for any that you can't find by name.)

reMarkable Markers

  • Still have the rM1 marker. Still a fine marker. I wish I had bought the aluminum one (for $100!). Not magnetic.
  • Had the Marker Plus but lost it. Worked fine.
  • Have the basic Marker. Like it a lot. Same light gray as the tablet bezels. Magnetic, of course.

Tab S7 / S7+ S Pen Replacement Stylus Pen

  • I like this pen. It's narrow and light. No eraser. Has a non-functioning button. Profile is round with a flat part down the length. It says "SAMSUNG" on it. I found a Pentel clip that fits it.

LAMY AL-Star EMR Stylus, Digital Pen

  • The coolest pen ever. I bought a graphite colored roller ball LAMY AL-Star pen and switched out the barrels. Way bigger diameter than the Marker.

FORERUNER Galaxy Tab S3 S Pen

  • Cheap ($16), but a bit odd. It says "SAMSUNG" on it. It has a "rubbery" feeling. The profile is roundish but flattish on two sides. Built-in metal clip. Mine is slightly "bent" along the length. Has a non-functioning button. Maybe a good backup pen.

Kindle Scribe Basic Pen

  • VERY NICE pen. It feels a lot like the reMarkable basic Marker. Charcoal gray. Magnetic.

HP 2EB40UT Smart Buy X360 11 EMR Pen

  • It has the "HP" logo. Profile is round with a rubbery grip near the point. Slightly fatter than the reMarkable marker, but short. VERY lightweight--plastic. Built-in clip that's part of the body. The "eraser" acts instead like the marker tip--it writes. But it moves when you press it.

BOOX Wacom Stylus Pen,High Sensitivity & Precision,Only for Max2 Note

  • Possibly my all-time favorite, but I lost it and cannot find where to buy one. Six-sided and the same size around as a pencil--black plastic. It had a moving "eraser" that didn't erase, but it DID register on the tablet as a finger press--my favorite feature. I'm hoping someone knows a source. I found a pen exactly like it (Acer Stylet EMR ASA640--don't buy) and bought it, but it does't work--it writes a few mm away from the tablet, even after multiple attempts to re-seat the tip.

I'm chomping at the bit for straight lines. I used to sketch a lot for woodworking and home construction projects. My attempts to do that on the tablet have always been too ugly for words. I'm not impatient enough to go to beta, though.
