Back in the 90s if a striker got a goal every 2 games they'd be heavily praised.

Kinda see this trait in zidane as well. When you've had unbelievable historic success in your first coaching job everything else is bound to pale in comparison and the more you spend time you spend in management the more your reputation will get chipped away. I can understand the fear that would slowly creep in.

This mild take is honestly lacking. Everything is either black and white with no nuance. Messi is a deserving winner. Halaand would have been a deserving winner. Mbappe would have been surprising but would have been a deserving winner. Each of them did get voted as best player by some, but not by others.
