Thanks for the invitation I might actually go there. There is way too much porn on lemmy.

How can I block an instance?

Hey folks. I'm relatively new to lemmy and the fediverse. After spending some time here I really like the idea and most of the implementation but there is one major flaw. As a user I cannot seem to ban a whole instance and that really sucks. I do not want to get bombarded by porn all the time but there are more porn communities on lemmy than stars in the universe. I can spend all day blocking them one by one.

So I either need a way to block stuff like porn and similar nonsense instances OR I need a instance finder that can help me find an instance by entering what stuff I need banned and what stuff I need federated. I do not have the time to look through every instance myself.

No never used it. But now I got curious.

After switching to the fediverse, I should also replace Google.

Not necessarily. One step to a better internet at a time. Sometimes people get overwhelmed by free software solutions because they try to do everything at once.

But with what?

I've tried a lot but replacing google search is not easy. You can of course use a meta search engine like searx which is great but then you hand your search traffic directly to some random instance owner. You could also use startpage which is basically a firewall for google search. duckduckgo does work and I use it sometimes but the search results are definitely worse than google's. The bangs are a nice feature though.

Interesting! Hope your school goes well. Pop OS is an operating system. I guess it was just a coincidence you commented there.

Same movie for me and same impression too. Not sure if the monster's were even necessary. Also it had more of a "run away from the explosion" vibe than a "oh this uboat is about to implode" vibe. But I can confirm it is ok-ish.

Edit: That's crazy. I've looked at your profile since I thought it's a funny coincidence. I've also lived in South Korea for a while and I've also used Pop OS in the past. Really interesting. May I ask what you are doing in Jeju-Do?

it’ll take years for achieving even the current level of usability that Windows provides out of the box

I'm currently dual booting Windows 11 and Ubuntu 22.04 and would say that gap has already closed. I cannot really work with the shell in Windows because it does not seem to understand bash which makes things difficult. The windows package manager is very cumbersome to use. Customizing the DE is a hassle and I cannot switch to other DEs. Most of the code base is closed so I cannot really see what is getting executed in the background. The settings come with telemetry enabled on default. I think it does not even have Vim installed.

Deshalb habe ich "Was?" geschrieben.

So clicking on an instance's instance list I can see all the linked instances and all the blocked instances.

Are these all instances that exist? What happens if a single person creates an instance? Is it then automatically "linked" or "blocked" or does it just exist "unlinked". If it exists "unlinked" then what is the difference between "unlinked" and blocked". And how could I get my instance linked if I create a new one?
