As a software engineer myself, this was a really interesting read and it's amazing how far the community has come with these tools to dig around in, make their own games with the SCI engine, and now total decompilation of the scripts with comments and annotations included with them.

No multiple endings, but you might enjoy The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. It's an official Sega product and free on Steam. Pretty entertaining, good art and can be finished in a couple hours. It's a simplified Ace Attorney style game, using inventory items and clues to interrogate the characters and solve the mystery.

I do adventure games on Sundays (Noon CST) on my Twitch channel. Mostly Sierra and LucasArts, but occasionally branch out to other developers and always open to suggestions for games I haven't discovered or tried before.

The 7th Guest and The 11th Hour were both stuck in my head (and on my phone, my old WinAMP playlist, the MIDI's are still floating around my computer somewhere) for the longest time after I discovered those games in the mid 2000's.

The Secret of Monkey Island is the first one I can remember playing. I also remember watching my dad play Police Quest 3 as a kid.
