Hence, now that I have the chance I'd like to upgrade to something much more energy efficient, idleing at < 10w.

Unless you're going full (sata) SSD, that's impossible as most drives will idle at 4-7w and go up to 15w.

So 20-25w is not that bad, depending on the amount of drives.

I use the Draw.Io desktop app, not the web version for obvious reason.

Use to do it on Visio.. But well Microsoft destroyed it.

"Shucking" not "shrugging" 😂

Can I shrug it and use it internally without having to format it?

Not always has some use the external HDD interface sometime partition the data off by a few bytes, Western Digital is famous for that on the element series.

So I would recommend backing up data to another drive or if you can shuck it without being destructive in-case it doesn't work while shucked.

So TLDR 50/50 chance.

only for 1400$

I would say that's pretty costly actually for a single CPU board, my full build was 1200$ CAD in July.

Check this vendor on Ebay for board : https://www.ebay.ca/str/tugm4470

It's where I got my Supermicro H11DSi (mind you it's the late 2017 model but not much new in between 2017 and 2019), fast shipping, pretty good price and he has a mix of ready to go combo or just parts if you need to.

I lean more on the Epyc side for the CPUs over Xeon but both are good.

Well first, 1U Thermals and noise are terrible due to the need of smallers fan who don't move as much air, but it's probably fine with NUC hardware as they are pretty low power. I would go for 3u or 4u at the very least if I actually want to move them.

Although you could just mount them in their own case.

Only when I type "shutdown" on the wrong console window.. New hardware or need to fix something.

So that's pretty rare 😂

FTPS or SFTP I hope? Because IF not I would go back to the planning phase.
