Tbf I had a 200 Euro bill. For one year. If i invest say 1000 euros, for a low power setup, id be running it for at least 5 years for it to pay off.
I currently run a truenas on old consumer hardware and the rest I host is on sbcs.
I mean, I agree we shouldn't be rude about it, but this is not r/vintagecomputing and if someone posts that 2950 with DDR2 ECC ram, I feel it is a worthwhile thing to respectfully point out.
This is more accurate. You could get a 2950 . Or just get an old optiplex or Fujitsu client PC.
30W instead of 200W, more recent and probably faster CPU even if it is a core i5 or sth

I agree with OP. I haven't posted my setups over the years because I didn't want the armchair quarterbacks to appear and rain on my parade.

I agree fully. The comments in this thread is highlighting the problem.
This negativity drives out passionate lovers and newcomers. I want to see the photos of old useless systems with blind enthusiasm from people learning.
I don’t want snarky unsolicitated comments, the place for those are in posts where people ask for advice with a thought about a system they think about or need better alternatives to and ask for those.
My dream main system I’ll buy soon is a decade old space heater where I’ve made the active choice emotionally for it, over a brand new system that I could afford. Yes, it is great value but the pick is not one of reason or budget.
I do enjoy the novel nature of doing dumb Setups and getting things working! My central password manager runs decryptions on an Apple IIe platinum, then the actual queries are processed for my various devices by a bit warden container

What can I say to someone that gets an OLD IBM with a dual socket 4 cores CPU, with 2 GB of ram and thinks he hit a jackpot, for 100€, with a system that idles at 200W and has the power of an i3 first gen.
Of course it's a heater, or a door stop, what other things you can do with that system.
Would be better if those people maybe posted before buying those systems, for shopping suggestions. That's a topic. Not your complaints.
So I agree that the advice is good advice however consider..
- They may not pay for hydro
- They get this dell 2950 for free and this is ground zero for them.
I think we can deliver that information without demoralizing someone out of the sub.

Of course. But there are situations of people posting about some very old stuff, that even for free or for tinkering, wouldn't be good. We are talking about vintage stuff, maybe good if you want to make an old homeland, to run just old stuff. What can I say in those situations other than that.
I hear ya I think the ops thinking is about the delivery right … we can just try to be kind to people who don’t know instead of a typical elitist computer people the world knows we are.
The inefficiency of those old machines isn’t open for debate they are facts

Depends I suppose. If someone is looking for guidance or advice that would make sense to me.
If someone asks for advice before buying, no problems, there are already people asking for those and we are mostly polite about those, saying why an old server wouldn't be the best solution.
But for someone that already has one, and post of it, I can only make some satire about it. We are talking about vintage stuff. And, I need to admit, I'm the first to love that old stuff, but I would compliment someone if it posts it on a vintage sub, but on Homelab we need working stuff, with real benefits, it's a different manner.
Let's make this sub higher quality.
6 years on reddit and not a single post in homelab, perhaps you can share your own homelab, or perhaps sign up to be a mod, or create your own sub? You can raise quality by contributing as well....

Don’t see how “nice space heater” can be seen as hate, that is essentially all the we are building here. Our space heaters are multi purpose ;).
