Hello everyone!

I just got a 42U Rittal server rack from a friend, the problem is that it doesn't fit in my basement.

Since I do not want to give the server rack to someone else, I wanted to ask if it is possible to run a part of my Homelab in the garage?

The garage is not insulated, so apart from the roof and four walls there is no climatic difference to outside.

As I live in the west of Germany, the weather here is pretty mixed, but the temperatures can range from -5°C to +34°C over the course of the year, and the humidity from 70% to 87%.

If not, I just have a very sturdy locker

I have my rack in the garage and it’s been fine. Some times in the summer the fans are really going. But rest of the time no issue. For connectivity I have a few cables going back to the house.

I’m in the UK so probably similar weather.

Do you really need 42U? Can you sell it and get a smaller one?

However, humidity is a big problem.

I work in a datacenter and somehow our stuff keeps working in 100f+ temps with humidity that makes the data hall feel like a swamp in the summer and shredded moths in the heatsinks and fans so you're probably okay
