USB web interface rejecting png and jpg (alien.top)

I know it is possible to upload png and jpg via connect, but I thought it should be possible via USB as well? A few days ago I updated to version 3.8.2.1965, not sure if this "feature" was a thing before as I rarely need to upload images. Have things always been this way or is it a bug?

I don't use the cloud service, so I didn't know it allowed image files to be uploaded.

What does the tablet do with these files? Convert them to PDF and treat them like any other PDF file?

probably, since downloading it back after annotating gives PDF (padded to page-like dimensions, not original ones)
