Data Hoarder

We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data -- legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time (tm) ). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures.

I got an LTO 5 Tape drive for free and I want to use to to to a bulk back up of my NAS. It's an IBM 46X6073 and I believe it was part of a library. I have a SAS HBA and the cable to connect them. I got it to power on, but that's as far as I got. It will accept a tape, but it spits it back out after a minute.

Will this tape drive work in a standalone configuation like this? If so, what is the recommended software to use with it?

Did you search for the drivers maybe install that first and then check Bacula or Imperius Backup for LTFS (LTO open file system) unencrypted backups.

Would you recommend Windows or Linux for that?
