Yeah, I'd agree with that. I'm a local in the Phoenix area. Our days don't really start cooling off until mid to late November most years, so I think I'd recommend basically doing the trip at the end of that November window.
I've also been out there along the Gila River for high temperatures in March, and it is really hot. Fortunately (if you're not in a hurry), there are a lot of river access points and you can go hang out in the shade near the water and cool off. I ended up just night hiking out one time to get out of the heat.
