hey guys! So I am dipping my toes into homelab (i know ill be poor for the rest of my life now) but I am currently a double major in cyber security and computer infrastructure so might as well start now.

So basically I have a 24 port gigabit switch that i cannot get to work on my apartments internet, I have a feeling they may have port switches blocked but was wondering if there was a way around that or how to check to see if that’s really the issue.

  1. I just got my hands on a server and was wondering A. what the best thing for a new person such as myself to do with it (what should i set it up to do) and B. what the best OS would be.

Thanks for any help i’m here to learn and your knowledge will greatly help me! Thanks you guys for being a supportive group I appreciate it.

About the switch. What switch do you have? Can you give us a name? With some switches you have to turn on the ports before you can use them.

For the server: Depends on the server. I started with Ubuntu-Server or Debian to play around with docker containers. If you want to play around with different OSes try Proxmox to create VMs
