MODERATORS

Community voting is up as well. There are 31 categories this year.

Game of the Year Nominees:

  • Alan Wake 2

  • Baldur's Gate 3

  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2

  • Resident Evil 4

  • Super Mario Wonder

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Would've liked to see Lies of P or Hi-Fi Rush take Mario Wonder's spot but oh well, they're both in other categories.

I feel like Baldur's Gate definitely deserves it, hands down, no contest. Unfortunately I think Tears of the Kingdom will win simply because more people probably played it who never played, or would even consider playing, Baldur's Gate because it's not a "mainstream" big-name-company AAA release.

Much like Elden Ring last year, BG3 is a usually-niche game that actually broke through into the mainstream on the back of its sheer quality. I imagine it stands a good chance of winning, though I wouldn't be surprised if TotK takes it (only disappointed).

That is an excellent point! I really hope it gets it. Out of all the games, I feel like BG3 did the most to push its genre forward in a huge way. I'm excited to see how the game awards shake out

I don't think so, now that the dust has settled lots of people agree ToTK was a bit underwhelming. It had many of the same issues as breath of the wild, like weak dungeons and bosses. The depths and sky islands also had lots of copy pasting, way more than breath of the wild ever has.

Great game still, but no way it'll win GotY. It'll easily win the action/adventure award though.

I agree with you on all points, but I guess I haven't really seen the same meh attitudes towards it that you have? The Nintendo/Zelda fans have seemed largely rabid over it since it came out, and I wonder if there's just so many of them that it will beat out the competition? Idk, I guess we'll see in a couple weeks!

I hope you're right, though, because how I felt at the end of playing ToTK was very different than when I started playing, largely due to the repetitive and aggravating game systems. It's a real shame, because I loved the story (not the way it was presented via memories, but still)

Baldur's Gate because it's not a "mainstream" big-name-company AAA release.

Bro why you sleeping on Alan Wake

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I haven't played it yet, sorry! That one might suffer from being released so close to the decision. The holidays are coming up so spending my extra fun bucks on that instead of games atm. I hope to play it soon though!

FR, Alan Wake 2 is good, and I think it genuinely has some of the most enjoyable writing in a video game since Disco Elysium. The mix of live actors with in-engine graphics is very cool too, Remedy did great!

But people will complain about it “only” running on 4090s (I’m playing it on a 2080Ti with DLSS and RT and I am 2/3rds of the way through without any problems) or the pulpy writing (which is by design). Let’s not even get into the “woke” arguments.

I'm wondering if it might suffer because it's also a horror title, and those tend to be more niche over all? It is very cool that we've got two of them in the running, though! Definitely shows how the public's attitude toward horror is changing, imo

Edit: guys, I am not saying Alan Wake 2 does or doesn't deserve to win lol. I am not trying to insult your favorite video game. I have no opinion either way, as I have yet to play it (plan to though! It does look good). I am just trying to be realistic on each game's chances.

This is very true, the original Alan Wake is already a niche game due to it being in the horror genre (while RE is more action oriented), while Max Payne from the same devs is beloved. I bet a lot of gamers forgot about it before the AW2 announcement trailer.

Definitely shows how the public's attitude toward horror is changing, imo

Maybe this’ll get Konami off their asses regarding Silent Hill, but who are we kidding.

(Also, sorry for my other reply to you earlier. I realized it was kind of snarky and deleted it. If you didn’t see it, then nvm it never happened ._.)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I would definitely agree about Alan Wake being kind of a niche/cult game, even among people who play indies. We can only hope for a (good) new Silent Hill, but Konami hasn't been inspiring much confidence with that in the last several years - _-

Haha, that's okay, I was wondering why I couldn't see it when I clicked on it! I feel like a lot of us are relearning how to treat each other on the internet here on lemmy. I know I am. Idk why, but years on reddit had me trained to say just mean things to people. It was very easy to forget that there was a person on the other side of a comment/post. Idk if that's how it is for others, but that's definitely how it has been going for me.

Totk was pretty mediocre, it's only there because of bias

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Underwhelming is a more appropriate wording. It’s a good game. It just leaves more to be desired. Especially after all these years of development.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Totally agree. It should win the greatest DLC award if there was one... and even there will have some competition from Cyberpunk

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

It definitely wasn't just DLC, but the new stuff wasn't built quite right for the new powers.

What was so great about the runes in BOTW was that the world felt perfectly built to utilize them.

But when you take that same fairly flat world and try to implement more verticality, it feels tacked on and incomplete.

Oh well, maybe "BOTW" 3 will overhaul the world to fit better with the mechanics.

Sequel, sequel, sequel, remake, sequel, sequel.

[–] darth_helmet 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Props to Bethesda for releasing an original IP, but unfortunately the game sucked

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

In what world is Mario wonderland a sequel?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm not quite finished with it but I've said "this is the best game ever made" multiple times while playing Alan Wake 2.

Good job Remedy.

[–] [email protected] -2 points 1 year ago

Sadly, it's highly unlikely that Baldur's Gate 3 won't win in every category.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

for me its Talos Principle 2

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

How can Alan wake 2 even be up there? I have never even heard of it or seen gameplay of it. Baldurs gate 3 is going to win it anyways. It's the best game of all

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

Why isn't Kong or Gollum up there? The entertainment you get from all the glitches makes my day!
