Home automation is the residential extension of building automation.

It is automation of the home, housework or household activity.

Home automation may include centralized control of lighting, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning), appliances, security locks of gates and doors and other systems, to provide improved convenience, comfort, energy efficiency and security.

My proposed home automation setup - thoughts/opinions greatly appreciated (alien.top)

So I am real new to home automation and building a new home sometime next year. After doing some research, I think I want to go with the Google universe on HA. So below is my proposed setup.

I have a few (for starters) simple needs:

Turn on/off exterior lights at dusk/dawn

Turn off TV/lights/check doors are locked/blinds down when ready for bed

Do the reverse for when I wake up

Get security/doorbell alerts

I want a single display (Google Home MAX and phone) to view my security cameras/thermostat/alerts

Remote capability to monitor/manage while I am away

So here is my proposed setup:

Google Next Hub MAX (stupid question, it says HUB so I assume I don't need a separate hub for any of the below?)

TP-Link Kasa HS220/HS200/HS103P4 switches for lights

Aqara door/window sensors (says it will integrate directly with Google Smart Home, but other places say Aqara Hub is required)

Reolink exterior cameras and doorbell along with NVR

Yale Door Lock

Someone's motorized blinds for about 1/3 of my windows (haven't figured this out yet)

How does all of this sound for a relatively simple HA solution?

I appreciate any thoughts.

Google hub, just forget this get a real hub dont be stuck in an ecosystem. Home Assistant is the free one that is generaly suggested.

HS220 Don't get wifi for anything you have any other choice for. These are things the should still be around and working in 25+ years. I suggest z wave, zigbee, or thread/matter here. Even sooner how long do you think TP-link can be trusted to keep thing's going they have allready broken the local API once.

Aqara door/window sensors, why on a new build would you use these battery powered ugly things? Hard wire cheap alarm sensors it cost me next to nothing to do when I built last year. It's trivial to integrate the real UL listed alarm so you get money off your homeowners and alarm.com etc can monitor it for a few bucks.

Reolink is fine suggest using frigate for the NVR to get all the ai object detection, just mke sure to wire them all.

As to outside lighting I love having dimmers on my exterior lights lets them work with the accent lights to give me plenty of light for a party but also having the WTF is that out in the woods insta daylight.

What are you going to do when your ISP crashes?

Don't put home automation on the cloud.

I use Homeseer which runs on Windows, Linux, or a Pi. Homeseer interfaces with (practically) everything, Z-Wave, Zigbee, Insteon, UPB, even X10. And it could give a rip whether the internet is up or down. Home Assistant is like Homeseer but open source so less expensive. Just a thought.
