Hey All,

Hoping you can help me grok what he is doing here. He has a capo on 2nd fret I think and it looks like he is just using simple chords, but I can't figure out what his strumming pattern is. I think it is fingerstyle but I am at a loss on how to actually replicate it.

Anyone have any ideas?

Side note this dude is a talented musician and his marble machine project is fun to watch. He has learned so much engineering from when he started, it is pretty amazing.

Seems like it’s visible, isn’t it? Also, is there a video of him just playing without talking about some random undecipherable topic at the same time?

I clipped the part but I can share the whole video. It isnt about the guitar though it is an update on his project.

He’s just strumming down with his fingers and then after some chords, strumming up to hit the highest string or two after the chord.

Sorry, to respond to your first bit, I am sure it is, but I am not a very good guitarist so if it is obvious I am missing it 😅

It sounds like he’s using the thumb as though it were traditional fingerstyle for the bass notes, plus hammering on to raise the bass note. On top of that, he’s using the remainder of the hand like a claw to strum upwards to hit the rest of the chord, where the back of his nails first hit the strings, before bringing them down.

Something like that!

If you’re trying to replicate it, the easiest way is going to be to first isolate the bass notes (use that to figure out the chord), but only use your thumb and see if you can play along. Slowing down the videos helps!

After you have that down, then layer in the remainder of the chords.

Good luck!

Thanks I'll play with that.

It sounds a bit like Resurrection Fern by Iron and Wine too, so that may help me
