It's here: the last big update before we apply to the App Store! We've got some exciting new features and a bunch of awesome fixes for you:

NEW ADDITIONS

  • Back by popular demand: the old compact mode! We've given it a little bit of a touch-up in the process. The previous not-very-compact compact mode is now called "headline," and large is still, well, large.
  • New search UX: We gave community search a whole tab of its own, featuring recent search history (clearable, of course) and a much smoother UI. Keep an eye on that tab--we've got big plans for it down the road.
  • Reporting Content. We added ability to report posts and comments via context or the ellipsis menu. These reports will be sent to community moderators.

BUG FIXES

  • Optimized image loading to improve scroll performance significantly
  • Fixed spelling mistake (thanks J0hnny007)
  • Fixed bug where link posts made it hard or impossible to enter the comments
  • Fixed bug where NSFW tags were sometimes missing
  • Fixed bug where new posts required a link and body text
  • Fixed issue where comment times could show up with incorrect times

KNOWN ISSUES

  • Cross-instance subscriptions are currently not displaying. This is a server-side problem, nothing we can do about it :(
  • Link posts are a little choppy in the feed--we're working on smoothing that out

Keep in mind that this is beta software (though not for much longer)--there may be bugs, and we want to hear about them!

Thanks again for using Mlem! We hope you love it as much as we do.

Cheers,

The Mlem Team

Why can’t I just copy images raw to share to my friends :(

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

We're working on it! It's issue 244 in our dev tracker.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Definitely needs a way to save/share images.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Solid app but it’s missing the ability to tap images and view them full screen. Hoping that’s coming soon. Cheers!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

We're working on it! We've got a rough implementation, but it's rough--we're hoping to get it polished up and down the pipeline soon

Thanks for the continuing updates!

One thing that drives me nuts (in iOS in general) is accidentally tapping the top right corner and it scrolling to the top. Any way to add an option where this can be turned off? Or maybe double tap takes you back to where you were?

We try to avoid disabling native behavior, but we do have a feature in the works to return to scroll position, so keep an eye out--probably coming in 1.1 or 1.2, we haven't nailed down the scoping of it yet

Awesome, thank you very much!

Great update! Thanks so much for bringing back compact mode for posts. You knocked it out of the park, and I think it is pretty perfect the way that it is now with respect to text size, information density, content layout, etc.

I think it would be great to see a compact mode for comments as well, that would change things like text size, content layout (one line for username, timestamp, vote counts instead of two), hiding certain elements (save, reply) etc. I'm not sure if you have anything in your upcoming customization update for that. :)

Edit: Also, I'm not sure if you are aware, but the options for All/Subscribed/Local that you get when you long press on the Mlem app icon do not seem to work. When selected, the app opens, but that is it.

The app is just getting better and better after every update! Btw, will Mlem support posting images, like Memmy and WefWef?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Great update but the scroll bar seems to be missing in the list of posts of an instance, within the post‘s comments it’s there though.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Amazing work!! Please consider making the number of comments be in the middle vs when it was posted. The most important thing in a lemmy thread (just like reddit) is the comments. Having the number of comments be in the middle would be much more convenient to know if I should open a thread

The new headline mode is SO GOOD!!!! Thank you for making an amazing app! Is there anyway to have the image previews on the right?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Will there be an option to mark opened posts as read? Something like on the web. Might be some setting I'm missing.

Do I hallucinate or did the app feature a lemmygrad icon before?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

So funny you say that, in the latest update the “MlemmyGrad” icon was removed, the default “Mlem” icon was made brighter and a new icon “Funny Conductor Lem” was added.

I don’t know why “MlemmyGrad” was axed though… Maybe failed he’s classes and didn’t graduate after all…? 🤨😅

Will this come to Android?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not unless somebody wants to remake it. It's built using SwiftUI from the ground up, which isn't really portable. It is open source, though, so anybody is welcome to port it themselves :P

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How long did it take you to build it?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Our founder was working on it for about a year before Lemmy took off and the rest of the team joined. Judging by his git history he didn't work on it super frequently, so maybe ~2 months? It's been about a month since then, so with 6ish devs on the team that's another 6 dev-months for a total of 8 dev-months

In general I really like the app. Great job on the UI!

I will admit I immediately check each update to see if an image viewer has been implemented yet though.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Great app. However, its not as smooth runing on my 14 Pro. The 120hz display makes it look choppy when scrolling.

And could you make the thumbnails on the right? Thanks man

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

To both: it's in the works. We're constantly optimizing our image preloading, which is the primary driver of the smoothness of the feed--we've got a really nice implementation that's way smoother coming down the pipeline soon.

As to the thumbnails, we've been getting a ton of feedback asking for various customizations like that, so we're bumping all the "easy win" customizability up--the next update we put out should have the option to swap thumbnail side, plus some other high-demand toggles

Excellent work guys. Do you think you could add the ability to reorder accounts in the accounts page?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

The new compact mode is SO GOOD!!! Thanks for making an amazing app!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Compact mode is still not compact. It needs to be MUCH more dense, IE 8-12 posts visible, not 4. Take a look at Memmy & wefwef for an example, they got it right

Great app. Let me ask - any good thoughts on how mlem could help Lemmy become video friendly? As long as video has to be either a gif or an off-site link, I think most people will find it too cumbersome to visit Lemmy for their daily dose of funny dog videos. Could there be some kind of embed/video host combo that gets abstracted from the user so that videos can be “posted” ?? Don’t underestimate the power of dog videos.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Down the road we’re looking at integration with standard video hosting sites to let them play inline nicely. The primary challenge isn’t technical but financial: most of those APIs cost money, and the project doesn’t have any. We have to have some discussions about how we want to offer features like that (and push notifications, which also cost money to run) without compromising our ideal of being a donation-driven project—we need to avoid suddenly ending up in the hole for money that we don’t have. Once we’ve decided on an approach, though, we’ll definitely be set up to provide a seamless dog video browsing experience :)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

That’s a very thoughtful approach!
