Greenhorns or oldhats, we all start somewhere in the series. Everyone is welcome.

No racism, bigotry, flaming, trolling, or any other behavior unbecoming of a guild hunter. We're here to play and discuss Monster Hunter with like-minded folks, act like it.

No "game shaming": This isn't a place for title vs title arguments. Take that to steam forums or elsewhere. Compare/contrast mechanics between games, discuss what worked or didn't and how. Devolving into flame wars of "MHX sucks, gib more MHY" will not be tolerated.

No "off-meta" shaming: having fun playing the game is the meta. Discuss strats, builds, and give suggestions, but that's all they are, suggestions.

Gonna run through the early game of MHW with my wife. Been only using Switchaxe for my first 120 hours or so here, and I think this is a good time to try something new. What would y’all recommend for a switch axe guy? I was thinking this time maybe something fast and can guard? Like the opposite of switch axe? I’m not sure where to go tho.

Congratulations on being the first community post (not from me).

Well, I’m sure I’ll make more because I’m bad at videogames and often need advice lol

There's only one way to be bad at monster hunter and that's not playing it. everything else is a correctable eccentricity.

Sword and shield? Pretty versatile little weapon.

What about the charge axe? Is it pretty much the same but with a power phial?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Charge blade would be my recommendation. It felt almost natural to pick up when it debuted since I was a switch axe main in tri and 3U. It has a combat loop that is similar in nature to swaxe so you’ll probably click with it like I did. And that shield can really help you in a tough spot. Plus, you get the unga bunga big number power we lack with the swaxe in the form of the phial discharges.

For a switch axe main I’d say either charge blade or dual blades.

Charge blade it obviously similar as it uses a switching mechanic, and also uses β€œenergy” in its attacks, but it can be a little complicated.

Dual blades are fast and fun, and I find the switch axe to be one of the faster weapons to it should be an easier weapon type to try out. It’s also super easy to learn.

I plenty enjoyed the long sword for a slot of mine, combos are satisfying to land but take a while to get good at. Though, since you said something about blocking you can try the sword and shield, I had fun with it aswell.

The Hammer has Water Strike, that counts as a guard, doesn't it? And it spins pretty fast, like Spinning Bludgeon is instant dopamine even if it's not the most optimal.

As an IG main, I am obligated to say IG, it is very fast, and though you may not be able to guard using it you have the best mobility in the game. 😁

IG has speed eh? I want to try something fast and I like quirky shit. Maybe I’ll give that one a go.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

The rhythm is easy to get a handle on, early game you'll feel like an untouchable god when fighting grounded monsters, and an invaluable tool when fighting flying ones. Just build for stamina and you'll pass with flying colors!

Sword and Shield would be my answer if you want something fast and the ability to guard. But IG or DB could also be a good option.

If you REALLY want to do something different: Bow.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

How come the bow as opposed to the other ranged weapons?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Probably because if you've ever played a 3rd person shooter in your life, you've played LBG/HBG. Bow is next level, especially in RiseBreak.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

The last one I got really into was Star Wars battlefront 2. So like almost 20 years ago lol

But I loved it so I’m gonna try that one next. Sounds sweet.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

lBG and HBG are pretty simple to use. Bow on the other hand is incredibly intense. Specially spread bows are super short range and you are constantly dancing next to the monster using your dodge i-frames to pump ungodly amounts of dps. Seriously a great bow player can keep something stupid like 500 dps with zero downtime.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don’t know what dodge I-frames means lol

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Bow has a switch skill called dodge bolt, while you are aiming if you press the roll/dodge button your hunter will do a short side step. During that animation there is a window where you are invulnerable to damage. So right as a monster attack you basically dodge through the attack and continue shooting. Mind you it is a strict β€œparry” timing.

Not in world though. I missed that from the op too.
