I am not a legal experte, but in the EU you might be able to sue the now.

It’s pretty sad that only EU seems to care about the privacy of its citizens. Tbh this seems more like a right, it’s my account and i should be able to delete it whenever i want, not ‘request’ meta to delete it

None of this is an attack on you but the simple reality we live under. I don't like any of it but it is true.

Tbh this seems more like a right,

Sadly, the only rights anyone has are those they receive from the nation state/political entity they belong to.

it’s my account

While you created it, it is on their system and I guarantee their Terms and Conditions (which nobody ever reads) state they can do whatever they want when ever they want.

Yes, in the EU, they have to comply within a month. If they don't you'll take it to your countries data protection ombudsman.

You can't sue, but you can and should report it and hopefully they will fine them.

Meta responded to me that "out of security reasons" they can't remove my data when I referred to GDPR

[–] [email protected] 52 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Report that to your country's privacy watchdog. That is not the law. After comfirming your identity they should remove it ( at least for eu citizens? )

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

they can't do this

I requested deletion multiple times more than a year ago. Still get stupid spam from facebook.

Change your name to something obviously fake. Years back I had my name as something that wasn't my actual name, they asked me for my ID to verify my identity. Well, I sent them some gross pictures I conjured up from the internet and uploaded those instead of my ID and it didn't take long for them to just completely deactivate it.

  1. Change your email to an aliased email address. (Proton mail for instance).

Confirm the changes with Facebook.

  1. Change your password to a unique max length with alpha numeric and symbols enabled.

Confirm the changes with Facebook.

  1. Follow Facebook's guide to deleting your account: Facebook: Delete your account

  2. ~~Delete your alias email.~~ optional

  3. ~~Forget the password.~~ optional

??? Never log into Facebook again.

Profit.

Edit: as others have suggested it is important to delete your Facebook account. I have edited the above to reflect the changes.

Aka how to ensure that all the data Facebook has on you never goes away. This is terrible advice.

If you're just trying to leave Facebook I recommend going the deletion route then filtering all emails from them.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Do you have a recommended deletion route?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 10 months ago

The only way it will work is requesting it from them.

When I requested deletion (in like 2017) it was pretty quick.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago

Not good enough, sadly

[–] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago

I went through an manually deleted all the content from mine years ago. Would be shocked if it wasn't mod-removed at this point for being both empty and unused

[–] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Try and get a deletion on most fed servers.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 10 months ago

Worse than AOL in the day.

At least with them you could contact the bank and have them deny charges going forward, to stop the insanity.

I don't know why I haven't already, but I think it's time I switch all of my GAFAM accounts to DDG addresses.
