As an ex-lurker coming from Reddit, I'm now trying to be more active on Lemmy to contribute to the site. However, one of the reasons I used to be a lurker in the first place, is because I simply didn't have interesting things to post. So now I'm kinda stumped, I don't want to return to my old habits of only lurking and nothing else...

Anyone else in a similar situation as I am? Just curious how everyone else is dealing with having to contribute a lot more now.

I'm not particularly a lurker, but I've been on the internet in social spaces for a long time. I think one thing to remember is that Lemmy is sma which means that in the market of attention you don't have to post the absolutely moat interesting thing in order to have any discussion at all. There are a lot of things that are Interesting to people but not the most interesting thing that die on Reddit. As a result, you probably have a skewed idea of what interesting content is. Just post anything you want to share. Don't think about if other people find it interesting. You'll be amazed how many people will want to engage.

It's not illegal to go to old.reddit.com and post links from there to communities here on lemmy. If you really want to contribute, pick a few communities and populate them with top posts from reddit.

Yep. I've commented more in the last 48 hours than I have in the last 10 years. Comment threads are generally shorter with 20-30 comments to reply to or engage with vs hundreds or thousands of bot comments, so it's been different for sure but also easier to find comments I can relate to and engage with

What are your hobbies? Post about those.

It’s ok to lurk but I’ve been trying to vote more (posts and comments) and comment more
