Zoom zoom zoom, new update incoming and Happy (late) Canada Day for my fellow Canadians out there (if there are any out there πŸ‘€) πŸŽ‰

I know I skipped v0.2.1+9 - this was because a build failed for TestFlight, which upped the version from v0.2.1+9 -> v0.2.1+10

This update was mainly focused on improving overall performance for Thunder - you should hopefully see less lag as you scroll down your favourite feed or community!

In addition to that, a few new major additions have been added, including the ability to view a user's profile, a revamped account page (for posts, comments, and saved posts), editing of comments, ability to download images and of course, more quality of life improvements to make your experience even better!

This release has a lot of under-the-hood changes, so its expected that bugs may show up that were previously not there. Please open up a GitHub issue if you find any of those!

Obligatory message: If there are any developers out there who want to contribute to this project, that would be greatly appreciated!

To see the full details of this release, check out the GitHub release announcement: https://github.com/hjiangsu/thunder/releases/tag/v0.2.1%2B10

For those on TestFlight, the update should automatically install on your device. For those who obtained the app through IzzyOnDroid, that update should eventually reach your devices!

There is also a discussion page here for any general discussions about this release if anyone is interested: https://github.com/hjiangsu/thunder/discussions/167

Thanks, everything is super smooth for me. No updates for showing thumbnails for external media yet right? It's cool, I'm sure it coming soon

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Thanks! Could you clarify what you mean by external media? If you mean something like Imgur, then that is not implemented in yet because I would have to check their API usage

However, media for links in general (png, jpg/jpeg, gifs) should show up! Let me know if that’s not the case and open a new GitHub issue for it πŸ˜…

I think what they mean is if an article is posted, usually it will show an image pulled from that site as the thumbnail. These 2 posts just show a chain link instead of images.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Exactly! Thanks!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thanks for the reply. I mean for things like external news articles. In other apps, when you have a news article, you'll see a picture from that article in the thumbnail in your feed, instead of just the hyperlink icon.

So for example if I go to the Canada community, I'll see a post titled "Rebuilding Lac-MΓ©gantic: Decade after rail disaster, residents say downtown still a desert" which links to a CBC article. In other apps, I would see the picture from that article in the thumbnail. In Thunder, there's no thumbnail, just the hyperlink icon. Sorry to be long winded, just trying to be detailed. Does it make sense?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ahh I understand, thanks for explaining it to me! I think it really depends right now on the link. Some links will show you the thumbnail while others don’t - this is definitely something that could very well be improved

The compact view only shows the link icon for now because I want to find a better way to differentiate between an image vs a link - if the link icon were to change to the thumbnail as it is, it would cause some confusion if someone was expecting to tap on the thumbnail to see an image

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Thanks so much for all your work. I understand wanting to differentiate between links and images. If I may offer a counterpoint, I believe Apollo didn't differentiate between them, and I never conflated the two. It was usually obvious from the post title whether it was an image or a link. That's just me and my personal preference though. I know Memmy differentiates between them by having a translucent link icon over the thumbnail. Although not my personal preference, it is one option.

Thanks for the great update as always! This app is quickly becoming my favorite Lemmy app.

Spectacular new release, man! Thunder is really improving by leaps and bounds with every release :)

One thing I am noticing: you mention in the release notes was the ability to edit comments, and that it should replace the reply gesture on your own comments. That doesn't look to be the case currently? Just tested in this post and I just replied to myself instead.

Keep up the amazing work!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I'm going to see if editing works for me

Edit: works great with swipe gesture

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Weird... It replaced the reply gesture for you? Mine still acts as reply. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I reinstalled fresh and am testing it now.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Hmm, another dumb question, but maybe double check that you’re on the correct account? (if you have more than one) πŸ˜…

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I do have more than one, but I'm only really using my .world account with Thunder. I checked my comment using both of my accounts (lot of timeout errors unfortunately) and both were only giving me the reply option on swipe. I even uninstalled and cleared storage and cache (though that still kept me logged in for some reason?)

Should I make a ticket?

EDIT: editing on Jerboa - clearing storage again seems to have reset the app properly, but I'm still getting the same behavior (reply instead of edit). Perplexing! Also experiencing a lot of 502s and 504s, but honestly getting errors in Jerboa as well so for all I know it's related to the .world Lemmy version update :(

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Edit: lemmy.world being weird so I posted the same comment twice πŸ˜…

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Also wow, the new profile page is beautiful!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

i dont mean to suggest anything that's been talked about but thunder is my favorite ui look out of all the apps

would it be possible to add searching for a post? i think liftoff, for example, has post user and community searches

also a toggleable community profile picture thing would be neat (the small picture next to community names) im no app dev though so im not sure the implications

also i periodically get an error retrieving info or something it says ubunto if that is any indication

im just nitpicking i think its a great app

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

More search functionality is definitely something I want to work on in a future update!

also a toggleable community profile picture thing would be neat

This is definitely possible! I would suggest you to check GitHub for any issues that are already present about this, or if not, create an issue for this so that it can be tracked!

also i periodically get an error retrieving info or something it says ubunto if that is any indication

This usually indicates an issue with connecting to the instance you’re on - maybe the instance you’re on is experiencing issues?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Its thunder fast! Good job bro!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Scrolling through the feed feels great ! Although I'm getting frequent timeouts due to voting, which would be okay if they didn't crash the feed entirely and I had to refresh and scroll back where I was. Now I'm scared of voting !

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

This is something I want to improve as well! The error page was initially there as a catch-all but there’s a lot to be improved in that area πŸ˜…

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

The link to the release page seems broken when opening from within Thunder (v0.2.1+8), it seems like it's getting url-encoded twice. Not sure if it's an issue with Thunder, Lemmy, or the link is just bad.

EDIT: Looks to be a Thunder issue, link is fine via web UI

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Hmm, could you create a issue for that on GitHub? Thanks!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

The update doesn't show in the app as a banner for me, but I will install it anyway. I will edit this comment once I have installed it to test.

Edit: I can edit stuff, also it's really good that you can now see profiles.

Edit 2: you should be able to view a profile from the comments, and I think the user should be shown on posts.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hmm interesting - Thunder should be checking for new updates when you first launch the app. There could’ve been a connection issue when checking for updates which may have caused this

you should be able to view a profile from the comments

Good idea, could you just make an issue for it on GitHub? Thanks!

I think the user should be shown on posts.

The user is shown at the top of the post under the title! Unless you mean something else?

I mean on the home screen and in Communities

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Added 2FA support, very nice

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Checking this update now. πŸ˜„

[–] Blaze 1 points 1 year ago

Great release!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Just grabbed it. Thanks for all the hard work.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I have to say, this is the best release yet. The app feels super snappy, loving it. I feel like it's now arrived at the refinement stage, it's already got 90% of what I want.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I am really liking the overall design and reply gestures for thunder. What a great app!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Not sure if it's just me but I'm getting logged out of my account for no reason when clicking back a few too many times
