The issue for us in Europe won't be Trump winning the US election, it could even be a good opportunity to strengthen EU and build a better EU defence and a real defence Industry (Look at how the debate on which country should have the leadership on the new Franco-German fighter-jet/Tank or whatever).

The issue is that we do have a lot of politicians who are more or less pro-Russia. If Trump can win, so can Le-Pen, if Schröder was corrupted by Russia, how can we be sure that the next german Chancellor won't be ? If Orbàn applies the same policies as Putin why wouldn't him build a strong military alliance with Russia ?

Let's not blame the US for our lack of unity and defence policy

Totally agree, we face a possible far right European Parliament next June. Brussels and the national governments refuse to fix the democratic deficit of the EU. If then Germany or France topple as well, Trump will be the least of our problems.

For a more united defence industry to make sense, you need a united foreign policy. Some things have happend, but with decision requiring all members to agree that becomes basicly impossible. Right now far right parties are in power in Italy, Poland, Hungary, Sweden and Finland and I propably forgot some. They are not going to agree to those kinds of decisions.

Without such agreements, you end up without a plan for a military, which dictates the set up of weapons. Take tanks for example Leclerc is a much lighter tank then Leopard2 due to being designed to be transported to Africa to fight there. Obviously you can transport Leopard2s as well, but they are heavier, which does matter a lot less, as they were designed by a divided Germany, who only really thought about fighting a war against a Soviet invasion. So wihtout a common foreign policy there can be not common military police and no common defence industry.

We really need treaty reform and if that means a small core EU agreeing on setting something like that up. Idk France, Germany, Spain and a number of other smaller countries. Depends on what is possible, but it needs to be done.

If Trump makes it again, the chance of worldwide chaos is scary high. Russia escalating the European conflict, China reaching for Taiwan, and we're not even halfway through the list.

Why, exactly, do you think China would reach for Taiwan? More lives would be lost taking Taiwan than there are on the island and the invasion of Taiwan is incredibly unpopular domestically (especially given that it's been "national policy" for decades without a single gram of action).

Xi already failed to build a legacy with his zero COVID policy, and things are rapidly getting worse economically. Fighting a war is traditionally a good way to distract the people, especially if it's Taiwan. I doubt it being unpopular or people dying phases him much. He's a dictator very much like Mao, who couldn't care less about millions of dead Chinese people. For them, it's all about power, not about his people. The CCP isn't interested in bettering their living conditions at all.

So... Has the CCP just been bettering living conditions by accident?

Do you even understand how the CCP structure works? Xi Jinping has some power, but it's mostly checked by the fact that he's not some omniscient being presiding over the People's Congress.

Xi has focussed his efforts mostly in Beijing. The Shanghai clique is no more, and standards are declining accordingly.

Please don't assume everyone commenting here only has a very blurry view from afar.

Sounds like someone without knowledge of the actual happenings in China tbh

When was the last time you stepped on Chinese soil?

So... Never?

Wonderful how people who don't know shit about a country seem to be the most confident talking about it.

HERE’S SOMETHING THE EUROPEAN MIND can’t fully comprehend: Come November 2024, Donald Trump may be headed back into the White House

What a condescending way to start an article

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Europeans are wide awake to the possibility of a Trump redux

Which one is it? It's prooly my stupid european mind, can't fully comprehend..

[–] bernieecclestoned 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think it's being unable to comprehend why they would vote the idiot back in?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

This might be the premise of the first sentence...I can't fully comprehend how proven criminals can keep getting leading positions. Not just Tram and US but also where I live and other EU countries.
